But one final tragedy was to strike the planet. In order to preserve the secret of the Daemon Primarch, the entire population of Armageddon, as well as all the surviving soldiers, was rounded up, sterilized, and sentenced to work camps for the rest of their lives while a new population was brought to re-settle the planet.

Hi all I stumbled upon the wonderully DARK and classic 40k piece of text quoted above and was wondering if anyone could give me any more detailed info? Why were the survivors sterilized? Why were they put into work camps, where were the camps? etc

Many thanks

I'd expect they were rounded up and sterilized so that they would have no way of talking about the secret. They also wouldn't have any children who they could then tell either.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the Reply EC yeah re:the sterilisation that was my thought too but I guess if they're in work camps they're guarded and then that means they can't escape the camps and even if they could it'd be practically impossible to get off planet so kinda why bother with sterilisation? Maybe it was just classic OTTism.

Another interesting question might be well who guards them if it's regular guard troops aren't they likely to appeal to them explaining their plight they were after all loyal soldiers just like their new guards before their current plight

I'd expect they were rounded up and sterilized so that they would have no way of talking about the secret.

What secret is that? That they've seen angron?

Any ideas where the camps were?

I know that this might seem irrelevant becuase the first war was ages ago in the 40k timeline but I just find it interesting and I'd quite like the info for some future fluff I'm constructing

you have to consider that armageddon is a hiveworld of 200 BILLION "today" so, how would that particular move work again? *10 milion troop transport vessels appear overhead* Parachutes? *sky goes dark* WTF? and then how would they brave the ashwastes, and what would they think of the fact that the entire word is empty and covered with ankle deep BLOOD?! *frendly local Inquisitor shoots a "shut up and stop asking questions" look* oh... thats how

Not ALL the population was rounded up and sterilized. Just anyone who knew anything about the rampaging Angron. Which was the entire army. And many servicemen and women...and such.

I believe fluff states somewhere that had it been any other planet, Exterminatus would probably have ensued. But since Armageddon is so vitally important, and even the smallest delay would result in massive losses elsewhere, they decided to restict the purge to those who actually KNEW sumfink.

BTW, they were rounded up and forced to rebuild whatever Angron destroyed. Which was a lot. New colonists arrived to find brand shiny new cities just waiting for them.

Also, Russ was pretty pissed off about the whole thing.

Forever alone

Remember that many Imperial citizens don't know what happened during the Horus Heresy, only that there was a great war in which the God-Emperor was entombed in the Golden Throne and Chaos was defeated. For them to know that one of the greatest evils to walk the universe still exists would cripple the Imperium's morale and cause widespread instability.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

More likely, because they'd be exposed to the corrupting influence of Chaos, an Chaos propaganda, they sterilized them and isolated them to reduce any possibility of the influence of Chaos spreading - as other fluff makes clear, (Almost paraphrasing a quote from some bit of 40k Fluff once the taint of Chaos has infected a planet, it almost always presages the loss of that planet. Usually, once a planet is tainted, the inquisition just wipes the whole damn thing out than even remotely risk having Chaos spread - as Emperors Faithful mentions, however, Armageddon is so vital they couldn't afford to do that, so they just did their best to isolate the problem.

One can argue that there are situations where planets infected by Chaos have pulled through - but for every one of those, there seems to be a good number more that just devolve into chaos and fall. Its really an ironic chain - many of the strict laws and edicts the Imperium puts into place to protect it against the influence of Chaos ends up driving whole droves of its population to Chaos, making it that much easier for Chaos to influence them.

Of course the alternative would be far worse. If the Imperium was to perhaps give Earth a chance to join chaos (even not on purpose) then how many people would just STRAIGHT up join slaanesh?

I'd join Slaanesh....
Anyway, if i remember correctly, they got rounded up and sterlized because normal people dont really know anything about normal space marines, let alone Grey Knights, Choas Space Marines, and a rampaging Daemon Primarch, which according to imperial propagnada, was killed many thousands of years ago. I also remember rading that Logan Grimnar didnt want the purging to happen, but was over-ruled.
