I had the exact same situation with an Eldar player once. But i wasn't as knowledgable when he claimed his wave serpent had both the Energy Field and a holo-field, which i assumed at the time was correct because i knew nothing of Eldar. Oh well.

Doesn't the BRB also state that pivoting on the spot does not make the vehicle count as moving?

Yes, but if you check the disembarking section you will note that pivoting counts as moving for the unit wishing to disembark.

I love tight rule sets. So, just to recap, pivoting doesn't count as moving except when it does.

It helps to think of it as not counting as moving from the point of view of the tank, but it does for the poor buggers being thrown around in the back

From a game point of view, it stops people from driving a rhino at the enemy, let them shoot at the front armour, then swivel it around to unload the assault-ready troops (thereby adding the length of the tank to their effective movement range without ever having to expose the rear armour).

actually that was not what i said at all. i knew the rule of not moving after WS has pivoted, the argument was that i had done it at all, when we came back to the game he said i had pivoted when i dropped banshees off and i said i didn't.
it was sorted in the end but just though i would put my 2 pence in and put the record straight.

Please, no drama. We don't actually care what happened, we just answer the questions.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.
