Got my first box set of Wyrd Miniatures last night (Viktorias) and have just spent some time putting them together at work. Very nice models I must say, not much cleaning to do. One of the models comes with a themed base as well which is nice. Waiting on a rulebook now as they flew out of the door so missed out on that. Doesn't help that I'm the webmaster for MCS Miniatures as I was sorting out the images to use on their web site and it meant I got a good long look at all of the range

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

I was fortunate enough to get a copy of the rules at Gen Con about a week back. Since then I've played 5+ games. I really like the mechanics. Once you get moving it plays very unique and the card deck with "cheating fate" out of the control hand is a lot of fun. (no dice boys and girls)

The figures are a huge win too. Looks like most games will run between 25 and 70 soulstones (the currency with which you recruit your crew). This will leave games between 5 and 15 figures on a table. Most figures cost between 4 and 10 soulstones, Masters (the leader of the crew) are free.

So for $65 USD you can buy a crew (5 man box at approx 25 soulstones - $30) and a rule book - ($35). A standard deck of playing cards can be used vs. the Fate deck ($7.50). I will note the Art on the fate deck is fantastic. Add a couple of blisters of minions for another $ 7 to $18 USD and for about $100 FULL RETAIL you will have a very playable "crew" with lots of options up to a mid sized game of 40+ soulstones. Several online retailers have these prices discounted.

The metal is soft. If you had experience with Rackham it is on par with their metals. In some cases a bit harder some a bit softer. Pretty easy to clean but the pieces are small. You will need a 1/32nd bit to do most of your pinning.

The game plays on a 3x3 minimum size moving up from there.

A good option to try something new from gameplay quality and price point IMO.

jgemrich, you summed it up nicely. I got to play Malifaux with the designers at GenCon and immediatly fell in love. It is a great little skirmish game with a beautiful range of figures.

Be sure to check out our interview with the designers: http://www.thed6generation.com/index.php?post_id=517425

Thanks. I work with the TTGamers and I believe I saw your team conducting the interview at our meet and greet Malifaux event.

After the interview and reading up elsewhere I put in for an email from the Warstore to tell me when the next shipment of rulebooks come in. Then Neil will get some more of my money.

This game looks very interesting.

From the few games you guys played, does it flow better at about 4-8 minis or more towards 12-15 minis?

25 soulstones is probably good for some intro or quick games. I haven't played above this level but was able to give a demo game at this amount in 1hr and 15 minutes with looking up material and explaining rules. I think you could easily play a 25 soulstone (approx 5 figs) game in 45 minutes with 2 experienced players. I certainly think Malifaux will scale up from there quite nicely. I believe 35 to 50 may be more common. This would net about 6 to 10 figures depending on costs.

One of the unique mechanics is that if you choose not to spend your entire allotment of soulstones on your crew, you can retain these soulstones as another method to effect the game.

Each Master (leader) has a Cache of Soulstones they begin the game with. (example... 3). Then there are 25 soulstones to recruit a crew. If you spend 21 soulstones on your minions/crew. This leaves 4 stones left over.... added to your cache of 3 and you will have a soulstone pool of 7 to start the game.

Duels are essentially flip a card and add it to your stat. On opposed duel (vs. another player) the attackers win on draws. Defenders must be strictly over attackers value.

After the initial flips you can choose to discard a soulstone. You can then flip an additional card and add its value to your first, thus increasing the chances of being the winner of the duel or being the winner by a more significant margin (also important).

There are considerably more to the mechanics. (suits, magic is a bit different, damage, cheating fate and twists of fate).

Interesting. I definitely need to get my copy soon. Hope the next batch comes out quickly.

Next step, deciding which minis to get. The smaller model count does lend itself towards taking your time on each figure.
