You could always buy the IG codex, as it contains examples of different paint schemes and such. Another thing you could do is to browse the modeling section of the forum for some other examples of great painting. And last, but not least: search google for some basic painting tutorials. Good luck

First off, what type are you doing? Cadian? Catachan? Vostroyan? Look at some real-world military examples. The best way to go for Cadian and Catachan Guardsmen is to look at earth tones or the scale of shades. And if you're not feeling up to attempting camo, you can always do them in two-tone military colours. An example would be catachan green fatiques and camo green armour/tank tops or somesuch.
For Vostroyans, just look up pictures of 19th century Napoleonic armies, or follow the red & gold in the I.G. codex.

Yea so Cadians will work with either Camo or Two-tone. If you want to paint the armour camo as well, you should probably do it in a different style than the fatigues so that it's still distinguishable. If you go with two tone, paint them in either relative colours (two-tone greens, browns, white/cream or beige, etc...) or opposite colours, an example being the standard Green/Beige mix used for the Cadian 8th

That's asking quite a lot. I suggest you check out the Dakka articles (upper left of your screen), or tutorials (a forum below painting & modeling and dakka p&m blogs), or the games workshop articles like this one

I second the use of the GW guide... they have the neccessary paints and if you paint up to step 3 it would be plenty-good for table-top quality.
