Hey all, I was just bored so I came up with an Idea to paint some IG as allies for my space marines. I think they would look VERY cool if they were painted to look like the Mobile Infantry from starship troopers, only thing is I don't know how. Can anyone help me on how to get that greyish colour? (I'm new so I don't really know how to come up with a paint scheme.)

Go rent the movie and watch it closely, pause on parts where you can clearly see the uniform and write notes.

No way.

If it was based on the book there would be no IG on his mind and he would only have 5-10 SMs in a 2k point game

If I'm not mistaken, there are starship trooper mini's out there for a starship troopers game. They're bigger though, but you could use them as an example.

I would imagine the Elysians would work as good proxies.

I was going to suggest using the Elysian weapon pack from Forgeworld. It's a good bull-pup design with the carrying handle/sight rail on it. Looks a lot like the rifles in the movie IIRC.

I use a bunch of SST "roughnecks" as my Guard Stormtroopers. It's heavier armour than the standard issue cardboard of the IG, but not "PA" like a SM. Looks fine as "carapace". You might also be able to get the Light armour guys (who are in the movies) if you look around, Mongoose did make some.

which ever you pick areas that will need attention. is the hands, star ship troopers all have gloves. they dont climb anywhere and are fingerless so dont help the circulation to much but meh.

a little different to the las gunof the imp gaurd, the mag is behind the grip, the grab handle is very long on the top and the barrel is extented. very heavy conversion for a new player. best off asking one of the many guys around to make you one and cast it to make a number of copies for the army.

the ELYSIAN WEAPON PACK from forge world donest contain that many las guns and they look too stubby

the helmets you are lucky with, the imperial gaurds artwork have always had a starship trooper feel and therefor the heads easily passes for the troopers rubber looking head bit.

though the amour itself in the film is a single piece that has a head hole and the webbing attached on the outside. the imp gaurd use lots of bits to get better cover. so for a total conversion id get a catachan box set and green stuff in the armour.

so you are aware the star shiptroopers are like imp gaurd except of, course, for the complete lack of artillery, mechanized transport, armored fighting vehicles, squad-level automatic weapons and indirect fire weapons such as mortars, other squad-level support systems, or combat medical units. Tactics consist of running towards the enemy in a big mob, running away from the enemy in a big mob, and walking from point A to point B in a big mob.

so lots of conversions to do with the support weapons.

a note from me id love to see the imp guard tanks converted to be drop ships like the once used in the movie.

for paint id use Adeptus Battlegrey as the base colour and dry brush the amour codex grey. black was if its dificult to tell the difference between two colours.

And as a sidenote, the movie was awesome. As much as I hate to admit it (being a good little sci-fi fan) Heinlein was NOT a spectacular writer.

He had great beginnings and great middles, but his books tend to trail off into obscurity and confusion at their ends.

The Mobile Infantry of Starship Troopers were more accurately represented in the 3rd movie... and only for a fraction of the film.

I would love to see pictures of this project completed.

I like the T.V. SST beater, the armor is cooler.

Starship Troopers was one of the best books I have read, ever.

It is a brilliant look at the soldier and why they fight. It also has a lot of social examination in it, which was brilliant. The few parts that are oriented to Sci-Fi are dated, but were ahead of their time when it was written. Let us also not forget how much the elements of that novel influenced the very game we play, too.
