Hi guys, I wanted to design an army around a search and destroy theme. Basically the regiment was trained to search around for the enemy, then once located to pin them in place with fire, and proceed to call in artillery and air cav to destroy them. With this in mind I went about designing a list. Basically these guys are the ones that get sent into an area to clean out resistant pockets. They take sniper fire, roll into machine gun nests, and tank ambushes etc. Keeping with this I figured very few green recruits would live very long and as such decided to go with a veteran heavy force. Anyway heres the list, feed back is appreciated, Id like to get this finalized so I can post this on my blog and get cracking at it.

  Company Command squad
-Company Commander - Plasma Pistol, CCW
  -3 Plasma guns
  -Medipack
  -Carapace
  -Astropath, Officer of the fleet
-Salamander Command Vehicle (Counts as a chimera) - extra armor, multilaser, hull heavy flamer

  3 x Veteran squads
  -3 Grenade Launchers
  -Autocannon
Chimera (Smoke, extra armor, Multilaser, Hull heavy flamer)

  2x veteran squads
  -2 flamers
  -1 heavy flamer
  -Demolitions
(ride in vendettas - see below)

Vendetta Gunship Squadron - 2 Vendettas

  Banewolf
  -Extra armor
  -Smoke Launchers
  -Hull Heavy flamer

  Manticore Rocket Launcher
  -Camo netting
  -Extra armor
  -Hull heavy flamer

  Leman Russ Executioner
  -Plasma sponsons
  -Heavy bolter hull
  -Extra armor
  -Pintle Stubber

  Hydra Flak Tank
  -Extra armor
  -Hull heavy flamer

Feed back is appreciated, totals come to 2000 points on the nose.

At 15 points, I'm not a fan of extra armour. Just seems that a lot of the time you pay for it (120 points across your army) and tanks that are shot get some other result - every time an enemy glances/penetrates your tanks, there is only a 1/6 chance for your upgrade to come into play. It's far more likely that the vehicle will be immobilised or destroyed, making the upgrade permamently worthless.

By cutting those armour upgrades, and maybe cutting the heavy flamers on the vet squads down to flamers (or alternatively scrapping camo netting on the manticore) you have 150 points to spare. Get another vet unit in a chimera. Get a russ, or two hydra tanks to fill out a squadron. I think you won't miss the upgrades that much, and another powerful offensive unit is very valuable.

Also, are you planning to field the vendettas as seperate squadrons? I would, the extra killpoint you're exposing is well worth it for resilience and tactical flexibility.

Hope that advice helps, I like your theme as well.

Sorry I meant to post those vendettas separately. Yeah I found it pretty interesting that no one seems to care much for extra armor. Its funny because at my FLGS its like no question you have extra armor on transports. Its pretty engrained. But I think Ill try it without the extra armor for a few games and see if I like it. Do you think I should drop the hydra for a manticore? if I have that 150 points I might invest in something a bit bigger, maybe another russ. thoughts?

Yeah, apart from the total cost to your army of having it on 8 vehicles, a chimera is 55 points. Extra armour is about 27% of the vehicle's base cost. Is that really an efficient upgrade?

Keep in mind that this is heavily biased advice based on my own preferences, but I like to strip almost all upgrades off units except guns. I find that very few upgrades are worth having compared to more bodies, hulls and guns. Let me apply this formula to your list:
Extra armour x 8 (120), Camo Netting (30), Pintle heavy stubber (10), medic on CCS (30) carapace on CCS (20).
  That's 210 points.

I can see how the upgrades to the command squad are useful, but I'd rather just trust in luck and their vehicle armour - if men die from overheats, so what? You haven't spent that many points trying to protect them, as long as they melted some marines they have fulfilled their purpose. So, had another plasma gun after cuts, that's 195 points.

Do you want to cut the hydra? If so, you've a total of 270 points in the bag. Help yourself to the heavy support choice of your choice! then try to squeeze in another troops choice OR upgrade the weapons on the vet squads. It depends on your opponents, but many people like meltaguns on veterans, and in my experience the heavy weapon teams don't do much if you like to play agressively.

Yes get rid of all the extra stuff, and add another vet squad to go in the other vendetta, and add another heavy support choice.
