I am thinking of starting an Imperial Guard army. I had played with my older brother about four years ago. Recently I started playing again. Does anyone have any suggestions to a noobie player?

I'd start with a Command squad in a Chimera.
After this, you can decide if you want to go the mechanized or partly mechanized route.

Thanks a lot. Is the battleforce for the Imperial Guard actually viable? Or is it a waste of money?

Command Squad and two infantry squads are what you'll need to play a basic standard game. After you've got that you can go wherever you want with it. 1 HQ 2 Troop is the required basic build for most missions though

EDIT: Considering the Bulls**t prices on Imperial Guard now that 5th ed is out, the Battleforce is a pretty decent investment. Otherwise it'll cost you probably 1.5 times the amount of the battleforce for the same number of minis by individual boxes.

So yea, it's about the only thing that's priced close to value.

Battleforce comes with a command squad

I say get two battleforces to start - that way you have two infantry platoons of 20 men each with a command squad, plus two heavy weapons squads. The sentinels can be grouped together to do their own thing too. Add another command squad for the company command, and you should have a decent little starting army for under $200, especially if you buy from Warstore or Maelstrom Games or somesuch.

Write a list up first. It will save a lot of time and money. If you end up buying oodles of guardsmen and run a mechvetta list, you will have wasted lots of cash.
