Last chapter arrives for 'Reading Rainbow' on PBS

(AP) – 1 hour ago

LOS ANGELES — The "Reading Rainbow" is at an end on PBS.

The program aired its final episode Friday, wrapping a more than two-decade run that began in 1983. "Reading Rainbow," hosted by LeVar Burton, was designed to spark a love for books in its young audience.

The once-popular show's ratings had slipped and production on new episodes stopped several years ago, PBS said. Along with the end of the broadcasts, the "Reading Rainbow" site at pbskids.org will be discontinued in December.

But the program will remain available for classrooms with off-air educational rights in effect for a year, according to a PBS Web site.

PBS and member station WNED, producer of "Reading Rainbow," are in discussions to create a literacy Web site and to continue the show's local story contests for kids on a national level.

Ah, man. I liked Reading Rainbow.

Not as much as Bill Nye the Science Guy, but books can't really compete with him.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Yea, back in elementary school I remember watching a handful of episodes. Lazy teaching ftw although stuff like Carl Sagan and Bill Nye can be decent enough substitutions to real effort

I'd imagine most people born in the 80's also was first introduced to this series during early schooling.

My favourite episode was the one where Geordi talked about the Enterprise D. That was like almost 20 years ago. Man, I feel old.

Gathering the Informations.

My mom ran a home daycare, where we had three or four kids in it.

The TV was almost never on(surprising, considering most of these daycares now, where they just plop on Blue's Clues or what have you), but when it was:

Reading Rainbow, Bill Nye, or the amazing Kratt's Creatures were on.

RIP Reading Rainbow. If only you could have gone anywhere :(
