Ive been a long time mechwarrior fanatic, i saw some folks at the local store playing with some clicks style mechs and such. What is this game, and how does it play?

I am interested in a new style of board game, and was wondering if this is a viable option.

So that game is really based off the Heroclix system?

is it a good gaming system? is it similar to 40k?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Gameplay.

Ok, if you know Battletech, or the computer games expect something different.

The game is very 'artificial' if that word makes sense for science fiction. You get a limited number of units you can move per turn based mostly on army size.

You alternate the units you wish to play and ignore the rest.

ranges are very short compared to movement capabilities, you dont get the opportunity to attack with a long range weapon more than once before being in base contact. You can see where the rules have thier fantasy origins as it turns battletech into a melee fest.

tactical gamplay works with 'combos' get this unit to charge out of that hovercraft to get in basde contact with such and such a target and it cannot fire. You cannot see the movers working in Battletech.

Also the units aere bland, the dials offer few options, normally one per weapon group or statistic indicated by a coloured background to the number on the dial facing. Some speicla abiliteis give an armour reduction, others ignore armour, or allow the unit to make its move as a jump etc Some of the more insteresting dials for some special character show a story but they are few and far between. One Kuritan gets a powerful melee attack on the attack dial for his energy weapon once the weapon is broken. Clearly he uses his gun as a club at moments of desperation.

By far the majority of the characters and almost all the units have no such features.

Background.

The units are very ecclectic with little real character, everyone has access to cheap infantry battlesuits tanks industrial mechs and mechs, even the clans. The faction differences are largely window dressing.

Wizkids also mucked around with the Battletech background to act as a vessel for this. With excuses for why the clans, and everyone else use armies that are mosr akin to lesser periphery state forces.

Yes there is the technological knockback of the Jihad, but no faction is truly short of high tech, battlearmour for instance is everywhere, and all factions have a blend of 3025 and clan weaponry.

All in all In was not impressed, I collected large amounts of clickytech, but only to act as marterial for playing Battletech on a larger scale.

It is also dead. There will be no more units made for it.

Play Battletech instead.

I must admit i was always a very range oriented player in the games, speed is your best armor.

I was hoping to find a game system that would allow players to use a variety of differnt pilot styles

You can still get a lot of mileage from the models. It is a pity that so few of the mech and tank designs were 3025 or 3050 originals, and a lot of those thatv were were crapped up, but even so you can still get a good selection of mechs to use in Battletroops or battletech games.

There are also kitbashing threads on the Classic battletech forums for people who convert up other mechs.

All in all though. I am glad its gone.

Indeed. I have about 400 of them torn off their bases that I need to get painted for larger, prettier demos.
