The number of images that show on the gallery front page seems to have dropped from 10 down to 4.

Was that a deliberate change?

It is a top-up-to-10. It needs to be efficient, so in loading the images it cannot fully take into account the author of an image. Normally it loads 20-30 images and then just skips images that are by someone who has already been shown in the top 10 that week. Rarely, there will be a few users that dominate the top 10 for the week which will cause fewer than 10 images to be shown. As you can see by the top images this week:

RAFF is dominating like never before - I'm surprised there is more than 1 image on the page this week! Should sort itself out over the next couple of days so isnt worth any sort of code update.

But why wouldn't it just keep going down? Do scores have to be above 8/8 or something?

It is locked off at something like 30-40 images as each image needs some further evaluation done as part of the initial query to make sure the image is not too wide/short or tall/long for the side bar. Every additional image is a little bit more load. While I could do some clever coding to get around that, it is only in instances like this where one user uploads loads of high quality images that it becomes an issue and that happens so rarely it is not really worth the time to implement it.
