im keen to come up with my own space chapter.looking through the LEXICANUM chapter list and came across the VINDICATORS.they have no recorded history /founding chapter/homeworld/colours etc but are listed in the g w chapter list.they were approved in 2001 and from a creative view i think i can run wild with them.
any advice criticism etc would be greatly appreciated

You might like to browse the Bolter and Chainsword's guide to making a DIY Chapter here: link Obviously you have to come up with something that inspires you and that you like but their tips are pretty handy and should help show you what not to do at the very least.

Try a colour wheel as well. Really helps for complement colours

Custom Chapters are the shiz, and why does it have to be approved by GW? there your miniatures you should call them and paint them whatever you like, as long as they are still space marines who cares? My guys are Orange and Purple, called Adeptus Awesoma, see the big thumbs up<<<< I know a guy whose chapter is the Space Cowboys, they all have wild west hats and there symbol is a large smiley face. Custom chapters and backstories are fun and should run it how you want it.

it helps to start with a chapter approved by GW, makes you feel like its a more legit army...

if the chapter name is the vindicators, I think it would be a safe bet to say they make heavy use of... guess what... VINIDCATORS as heavy support... which is used to break fortifications, so i'd hazard a guess that they are based mostly on shooting, with a few dedicated assault units in there (terminators, probably) to take advantage of any holes they can breach in the enemy's walls.

Fair cop, still makes it a bit restrictive if you ask me.... lol

Not really restrictive.There is a space marine chapter for every combat doctrine out there.
Raven Guard:Geurilla Warfare
White Scars:Rapid Attack
Salamanders:defensive trenchwarfare
Just to name a few.

Fair enough, but i was more thinking colour than combat doctrine. And as for combat doctrine it is pretty specific if not restrictiv, let's see someone who has decided to paint there models Salamanders because they like green but wanna play them on bikes because they also like speed

Then call them some thing else.Call them the salad bikers if you want! you can still paint them salamanders. And they could be sent on a reconissence mission and be using bikes for scouting puposes.
