Subject: Painting Ork skin/clothing?

Hungry Ork Hunta Lying in Wait

Hey everyone, I'm going to be getting my first Ork models soon and I would like to know some good paints to have available for their skin. It doesn't have to be the basic Ork skin color, I'm open for suggestions. Also, what kind of paints should I be expected to buy for Ork armor and clothing? I know it's all up to preference, but I would love to hear some suggestions.
I will have roughly 20$ to spend on paints, keeping that budget in mind. If I will need more money, be sure to let me know

Paints for orks:
Skin: Goblin green base colour, badab black wash, then higlight it with goblin green.
Clothing: bestial brown with a badab black wash, once again using bestial brown to highlight.
Metal: boltgun metal, badab black wash, boltgun metal highlight.
Reds: blood red, badab black wash, blood red highlight.
For abasic yet effective way to paint them simpy paint on all base colours, wash with badab black then higlight with the base colour again.
Quick, simple and effective.
colours i would suggest: Goblin green, bestial brown, boltgun metal, blood red, badab black, chaos black, skull white.
For orks these will be the only paints you really need to start off with.

Jovial Plaguebearer of Nurgle

id get knarloc green, goblin green, thraka (wash) (flesh)
tin bitz, boltgun, ogryn flesh (wash) (metal)
ultra marine and encahnted for deffskull blue
mechrite red and blood red for evil sunz
go with the foundation medium brown thing for the leather
that says a lot of it and if you want teeth go with bleached bone plus the ogryn flesh
this evens out to 12 paints which is like 36$ with out tax =/
so you can drop certain paints deciding on what you need you could always only use 1 color for each part but this would be a nice start before getting even more in depth of the models

If you are short on cash, head to a local craft store. A lot of painters use acrylics from craft stores, same quality (or better) 1/5 the cost and 3-4 times the quantity. If you want a basic paint job go with the wash tactic. Do a base paint job, you dont even need to be super neat the wash will hide the "over the line" mistakes. After you paint the skin, clothes, armor, weapons just do a black wash. If you want to go a step further you do the same technique but using the black wash layer as a shading layer, go over everything again with a slightly lighter color (add a small amount of bleached bone or equiv. but never use straight/pure white) and dilute with 25-50% water, this will allow the darker layer to still be seen as opposed to just covering it up. Then go with a lighter highlight layer. Youll get 3 layers. Shade, base, highlight. pick out the eyes, teeth, nails etc... at first it takes time but you can assembly line them and do 10 in about 3-4 hours when you get the hang of it.
As far as paint schemes, it depends on what your going for. Do you want clan colors or just your own? A easy one is black everything green skin dry brush metal. Other than that go wild have fun orks dont care about being color coded or looking the same, leave that for the clones and umies.

Hi mate,
For Ork skin I generally use goblin green, followed by a black wash then build up highlight with a mix of Goblin Green and Sunburst Yellow.
For clothing I use Scorched Brown for the trousers, mithril silver for weapons with a heavy black wash on top and Chaos black for boots and belts etc..

Thanks for the advice, But I was wondering if Scorpion green would work well for a goblin green highlight too? because I already have some left over from my space marines.

I usually use bleached bone + goblin green, but it is my understanding that scorpion green is a very bright and vibrant green (Im not sure, I dont own it), so you may have to tone it down with thraka green wash if need be.

Ronin is right, Scorpion green would be to bright unless you want neon Orks you could experiment with different schemes , perhaps adding Golden yellow or Bad Moon yellow to the mix or bleached bone instead of sunburst yellow, after all no Ork would look the same I guess

I like to vary it a little. Some in catachan green, some in Vallero Olive Green, some in goblin green, all of them washed with Thraka Green. I generally go darker the bigger and meaner the ork is. This in itself I think looks pretty good, but if you give slight highlighting with scorpion green, it looks smashing. EDIT: Oh, and for clothing, I paint pants and shirts in all sorts of color, and I paint armor and points of interest in my army colors (red and yellow.)
