i am going to be playing my first 40k this week and this is the list i came up with, i know there isn't a huge amount i can do at this point level but i wanted to field as many units as possible and still have the boyz mobs large enough not to run the second turn. also would deffkoptas be a better alternative to nobz?
warboss, big choppa, bosspole.
21 boyz
nob, bosspole, and pk
21 boyz
bosspole, nob, and pk
5 nobz.

Drop the nobs and add more boyz. you can get atleast 60 boys and attach an HQ to one of the units. This would be a pretty overwhelming force at 500 Points.
The nobz just arnt worth it at this point level IMO. Drop the nobs get 3 squads of 20 or so boyz and for your HQ get a Big Mek with Custom Forcefield. You should be under 500 and if your over it shouldnt be by to much.
The KFF Mek will give your orks 5+ cover and you should be able to get your turn 2 assault in on whatever he has. if you get the charge, which you need to do, you wont lose in CC against most things. The only thing that comes close to beating my orks and giving them a challange is Nids. Granted i run 30 Boyz to a squad but at this point level you should do fine.
Also to answer your question, Deffkoptas are fairly useless. If your going foot sloggin/greentide, dont run mek of any kind. when your gaming group increases their points, increase your squad sizes to 30 and just max out the number of troops units you can have which is 6. So you would be running 6 sqauds of 30 Boyz. Then you can go with Ghazzy as an HQ since hes a beast in CC and gives you an extra waaaaghhh.
Be sure to let me know how this runs. I can give you some tactics and advice...just PM me.

Yeah and its just a lot of points that could be spent towards boyz that are just as sick. Send a squad of 20 boyz into a sqaud of 5 nobs and the boyz will destroy them. Also, nobz are best used as anti armor units. so without claws their just not worth it.

Its really tough only running 1 trukk since its the only piece of armor you have. It wont make it through turn 1. Plus you have to drop one of the squads down to 12 and if you only have 12 boyz trying to run up the table after their trukk gets blown up, their going to get destroyed rather quickly.
The key to orks is spamming one thing. If you like Boyz, then you max out boyz. If you want trukks, then you run 6 trukks. If you like Kans, then you run the max squads of killa kans and you run as many squads as the OC allows you. Never try to mix and match Orks, it never works out.

Id even drop the warboss and run a weirdboy, less points. At 1000 points or less the horde is unstopable. I played a bunch of 500 point games when 5th came out and I ran 60 boys (2 PK 3 rokkits 3 BS) with no HQ requirements. Needless to say I ran roughshod over everyone, people were re-making lists just to beat the horde, even 3 dex squads with heavy bolters and missile launchers couldnt kill em all. The only hicup was a nurgle CSM army and that just took time. But for the most part everyone was out numbered 6:1.
So if you dont have to run a HQ dont, just go with 2 full mobs, if you do run a weirdboy (not a warp head) youll get free waagh's, bonus attacks, SM killing templates and some melta las cannon shots. All for 55 points
225X2 =450 (2 30 boy mobs, w/ nob w/ PK, EA, BP)
Drop 1 boy for 59 boys and youll have points for the weird boy. You will just eat this guy alive just run at him everyturn, youll take some losses but who cares he will prob. only have 10-20 models compared to your 60.
Dont bother with a trukk or any vehicles, Just run 60 boys.
Oh, and please dont split up the army, take the horde and run it at the closest chunk of his army, getting them in CC as soon as possible. This way you limit the number of shooting rounds he gets on you. Too many people run mobs just willynilly and whine when they get picked apart. The key to the horde is to take as many boys as possible and ram them down the opponents throat as quickly and as violently as possible dont send them wandering all over the board. As far as objectives...who cares "if at the end of the game the opponent has no models left on the board you win" If you play a mission with a lot of objectives just place as many as you can as close to each other as you can and as far forward into the enemy lines as you can. This way you dont have to hold anything back all the objectives are forward and 12" away from eachother.

"For the emperor!" "E' aint listenin!" *squish* (my fav blood and thunder quote)
BUT NOBS are NO GOOD at CC "ork town grot"
-perhaps the single dumbest comment I have ever heard-
Boss Zagstruck and Her-ORKick intervention, anything you can do we can do better |
