Is the Blood Angels pdf Codex a stand alone, or can I use it along with the SM codex?

Although the BA Codex online is basically a complete codex in itself, there are a few things that are strange & missing.

Under terminators entry, the entry is for 5 termies only for xxx pts. However, there is no mention of the points if you want to add 1-5 more termies into the unit! Can I add termies using the SM codex pts?

There is no entry for the Ironclad Dreadnought in the BA pdf codex. Can I still use the IC Dread?

Thoughts?

It is stand alone. Anything not in the BA codex you cannot take. So no Ironclads (they get Furioso Instead), 5 Man Terminator Squads (like Dark Angels) etc. etc. You do get Assault Marines as Troops though. And Dante.

Fair enough. The IC Dread model looks like a Furioso anyway with a power fist & a chain fist...Thx.

Same goes for wargear. No SM codex Storm Shields. You're stuck with the crummy ones in the BA dex.

Don't forget the Death Company. They, more than anything else, are our signature unit.

But they suck don't they? And Jump Packs are pretty much mandatory, and you need to buy a Chaplain or the Enemy can herd them.

They're not perfect, but they hit hard. The current codex does steer you towards builds that support the DC, but you still have choices. I think most people prefer jump packs for their DC, but other like rhinos because they don't have buy a chaplain or corbulo to control them then.

They are far from sucking if you use them right, Gwar!. Jump packs are by no means mandatory... I'd rather put them in a Rhino that has the overcharged engines and shoot them across the map in a turn. You're gonna be buying a chaplain or a SC to control them anyway, since the rest of the HQ options suck, so that is not a big issue.

Even if you don't care for their furious charge, fearlessness, Feel no pain, re-rolls to hit with the chappy, or their Rending attacks, consider this: Your enemy probably knows about them or might think of them since they are big black space marines with red x's painted on them in a sea of red dudes. Psychologically, they work as a fine terror unit. Put them in a special rhino just for them (ensuring to paint it black and put big red x's on it), and zip them around to scare the guy. He'll focus his fire on it more than likely, and hopefully ignore your other units like Baal preds.

BA is a stand alone dex (thank god)
Ok, so 4+ inv saves from storm shields and min. sized termie units.
But you do gain some pretty decent units in return. (also, 2 of the best characters in the game, even though they dont change list style)

FNP, rending, FC, throw in a chappy for all the extra crap and you have an ork mob killing unit, that can also take down small vehicles and MC's.
They shrug off most fire and with jump packs become a highly mobile shock unit capable of ruining peoples game.

They use up no FOC space, most of the time you pay for only the jump packs for them, they can use transport (without packs)

Long story short: mix a beserker with a plague marine and you get a death company marine with a really pissed off attitude.

This is off topic, but it doesn't matter really as the question has been answered.

Being that Space Wolves were my first army I feel I must defend their honor here.

I'll take my super space vikings against some vampire worshipping BAs any day. Can't wait for my new codex to arrive.

I love Space Wolves as well but I was sad to read the little story how some of them turned to Chaos and betrayed their brothers during a boarding action on one of their battle barges by the Red Corsairs.

The thing about Blood Angels is that they dont have an EZ button bolted on so you dont see many people play them anymore; they used to be a very popular army though.

I forgot to mention Mephiston in my list of units unique to Blood Angels. Their rhinos and Baal predators come with overcharged engines as well.

Mephiston is a beast
Have him running with a unit of vets / honour guard (using wings os sang. to keep up)

Or, load him and 10 assault vets (no packs) into a land raider, then find the biggest mob possible to unleash them on.

I think the biggest amount of points ive throw into 1 formation was against a duel nob bikers list.

10 death company
Chappy
Mephiston

Unit may be somewhat slow, but it managed to destroy a unit of 9 nob bikers + warboss in 1 turn, then finished off the 2nd unit (5 nobz and boss) in the next turn lol

I used to run Mephiston, 10 DC and Corbulo in a crusader. It's funny how often people tend to forget that landraiders have assault ramps. Two landraiders in a BA army is just cruel.

The lack of an invulnerable save severely limits Mephiston in my experience. I don't play BA, but I've played/watched several against them, and he was never much of a threat.

Mephiston hits really hard but he is an IC close combat specialist without an inv save.

I usually take Dante and Brother C, the buffs those 2 provide for the army as a whole are too good to pass up.

Is Corbulo that useful considering a lack of Jump Package?

Yes since most players run a mix of jumppacks and rhinos providing the blockage of LOS extra cover saves etc.

Heh, well now time for a Question from me

I'm playing a BA guy this weekend and I know he Is gonna bring his Land Raider with DC inside. Is this a major threat or will Pod Wolves be able to handle it?

I'd say yes, the DC has 4 rending attacks on the charge each and almost always has reroll failed rolls to hit.

But they are not as much of a threat as a 10 man VAS in a list with Dante and Brother C in it.

Thats the thing about BA lists you need to know what the strongest units are and work out a kill priority from there.

As it stands the DC are a fearsome unit that with tear through any marine squad if they get the charge off.

Man thats was the good old days now you cap at 10 Models.....sad give me the old 3rd Ed. Codex anyday.

They don't cap you at 10 Models, they just stop you being able to buy extra models after 10. If you had 6 Assault Squads, 3 Devastator Squads, 3 Terminator Squads and 2 Honour Guard, you get 14 Free Death Company (Or 14@5pts each if you take Jump Packs)

Bring Ragnar with 10 grey hunters with bolters, drop near his assault troops, get out and rapid fire, when he assaults you laugh as ragnar wipes out the squad before they get to attack, repeat. Add a meltagun to make them anti-landraidery

Bring Wolf Guard Battle Leader with Frostblade, Stormshield, Wolf Pelt, joined with 10 grey hunters with bolters, drop near his other assault troops, get out and rapid fire, when he assaults you laugh as you Wolf Guard Battle leader kills almost all his dudes before they get to attack, repeat. Add a meltagun to make them anti-landraidery

6x scouts with meltagun, WGPL with combimelta, and all with meltabombs, OBEL, drop your pods close to his backfield, if you have any ranged support he will be forced to ignore it, scouts will wreck land raiders all day long,

shoot big guns at death company, or try to sneak a charge on them via transports. (I use land raiders instead of drop pods, I dont have much trouble getting the charge, but I would assume its a bit more difficult for you)

Bloodclaws with powerfists will make his ICs cry, no eternal warrior, 9 attacks, almost a guarenteed kill.
