Hey All,
So I am doing a drop pod list and I am lacking one important item - drop pods.
Now I am not a rich man, so buying 7-9 drop pods is out of the question at the moment. Do I am making some. (see below).
So my questions is this: which one would you, the community, say looked more in line with a normal drop pod? I like the left one more than the right one, but the right one (when built correctly, which this one is a little off) I have seen more of in the games and is generally accepted.
If anyone has any other comments about it (or improvements possibly, like glueing tank door bits onto it, etc) please let me know.
Cheers

I like both. I'd go with whichever one you find easier to build.
As far as details. Parts of straws, wires, and bits form plastic kits go a long way towards improving the flat look.
Also, possibly adding plasticard or thin cardboard to break up some of the flat areas and give more detaisl may help.
Plus rivets. Lots of rivets. Gives it the grimdark chunky technology look.

The easier of them was the left one. Its a tube with 5 fins glued to it. Pretty simple and looks acceptably close to an actual pod.
Ill try to find some card stock or plasticard around here. All this mess in my office/studio, something suitable has to be laying around.
Cheers

Here's a shot of one I got as a gift from a visit to Edmonton:
As you can see, 5 support posts arranged in a star, with a door between each to total 5 access points. Main turbine in the middle and 5 retroburners on the bottom. For drop pods, the general appearance of the one on the Right is closer. Right now you've got it set up like a Dreadnaught pod. Add 2 more fins to it and you have a troop pod.

I would have to agree metallifan on that. You also should add a lot more bolts and rivets to it. It will really bring out the Droppodienece out of it.

I would say go with the one on the right. I would add about an inch to the bottom, but it looks great so far.

I would say use both. Make different units different pods. And agreed you need to add detail to both (although Im sure you werent done X) Just do what ever you like best though. I dont think anyone will care which one you use unless its a hardcore no proxy gamer or something!

I wish I could credit the designer of these jpegs, but I can't remember where I got them from...
But they are nice little card-stock drop pods. Print 3 of these sheets onto some cardstock or glue the paper onto cereal box cardboard or something, and go to town. They're cheap, if nothing else. If you want, I have other doors with icons and different colors too. Alternatively, if you are any good at picture editing, you could probably change this one around to suit your needs.
So sorry to whoever's work this is that I'm biting, but thanks for creating it and you rock!

the one on the right looks like the FW dreadnought drop pod with 3 larger doors.

I vote the one on the left. Detail the fins a bit - you can buy strips of plasticard that make that sort of thing much easier very cheaply, add a rocket motor and something that suggests hatches and yer in great shape.
One thing I've thought would add alot to pods is impact craters. A great way to add detail, if you feel the pods are somewhat bland.

I like the one on the left as well. Having an actual storm bolter goes a long way to quelling WYSIWYG complaints!

The one on the left is WAY more awesome-looking. And i COMPLETELY agree with Polonius, you cut out the doors and get a storm bolter hanging from the ceiling inside. That, some rivetry and a swanky new paintjob will pretty much stifle all complaints i foresee.
(Take it from me, people care less that your converts look nothing like the real deal if you give it the correct weapons and a decent-looking coat of paint. I know from experience...)

Thank all for the comments and suggestions.
The one on the left (5 fin) is probably the one I am going to go for. The right one (3 fin) is a homemade version of the FW dread drop pod that I got from somewhere online (cant remember at the moment). That one is pretty intensive for cutting and assembly, and really I would rather spend time elsewhere.
I think I am going to just do the 5 fin version and add some rhino doors and other items (weapons, obviously) and paint it up.
After all, these are only temporary till I get real drop pods. And it may turn out that I want to deploy some other way. Who knows.
Thanks again for the ideas. And Buttlerthepug, I think I will finish the 3 fin one and use that as a dedicated dread drop pod. Having both would be awesome and I could always change it up and put troops inside it to freak out my opponent. I love doing crap like that.
Cheers mates.
