When an Ethereal dies, his Price of Failure rule states that "every unit of Tau (not Vespid, Kroot or Drones) must take a Morale Check". It has only just occured to me that this could also be interpreted as vehicles being affected. The obvious answer seems to be no, but nowhere does it mention that vehicles are exempt from this rule. Is this true?

Thanks,

Vehicles are exempt from all forms of Morale Check.

Good point. Actually, if vehicles were meant to be exempt from the test, then wouldn't' the rule state "every unit of Tau Infanty must take a Morale Check"?

TWo problems:

1) It's really more a case of "specific trumps general," not "Codex trumps rulebook." Here, there is a general rule that all units take a morale test. Vehicles (and fearless units) don't take morale tests, so are exempt.

2) There is no mechanism by which to take a morale test on a vehicle. It can't be done.

usually when vehicles have to take a morale check the rule says what LD value they have to take it on. don't have the codex in front of me but i don't think a LD value is listed.

There used to be rules in 3rd edition where they listed the "basic" leadership for each army if a vehicle needed to take a leadership test. It was seldom used, to the extent that I've never once taken a leadership test with a vehicle.

Codex>Rulebook Doesn't exist. Its Specific > General. SA is a good Example of where the BRB > Codex.

So...Generally, vehicles don't take Morale checks, but in this Specific instance they are called to.

Ok, roll a Ld Test. What Ld do you use? Vehicles do not have a Ld Value, so cannot take the test. Therefore they can neither pass nor fail and you just broke the game. Also, "Vehicles never take Morale checks for any reason." is a bit more specific that "Each unit takes a Morale test".

Changling Causes a Leadership test, not a Morale Test. Furthermore, Changeling states what Ld to use for vehicles.

Ok, I know that specific > general, but on page 63 it states that "vehicles never take morale checks for any reason.

I dont know, but that sounds pretty specific to me. It is my opinion that while specific does trumph general, there are some things that cannot be overruled by a codex (ork leadership being maxed out at 10 and not higher due to their mob rule special rule comes to mind). Again, just my opinion, everyone is entitled to his or her own.

Edit: Is there any army/squad/figure in the 40k universe that actually forces a morale check on vehicles? I dont think I've ever had to roll one let alone even played against one.

There are a few Units that make Vehicles take a Leadership test (Primaris Psyker and Changling come to mind) but none that make them take morale Tests. In both cases it states that vehicles use Ld 10 because they normally do not take Ld tests.
