I noticed the other day that while the marine drop pod rules state you cannot assault out of it on the turn you DS even though the pod is open topped, the templar pod has no such stipulation, am I correct in thinking that this means that Templars can assault out of thier pods?

No, they cannot. Read the Deep Strike Rules on page 95 BRB.

I know what you are thinking, but I don't remember of anytime you were allowed to assault out of a drop pod (any chapter) I have actually called GW on this one, and I was told that the BT are not allowed to assault out of a drop pod. The only moves you are allowed to make are a run move or a righteous zeal.

You cannot assault on the turn you have deepstriked.
Unless of course the unit has a special rule which allows it to do so.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

But technically the open topped drop pod deep striked, not the guys inside it....

Technically ,you should read the Deep Strike rules, especialy the bit about disembarking from a deep striking transport vehicle.

Think of it this way:
If a Vehicle Moves, did the unit unside move? No, but it counts as moving.

Just to try to be helpful, if you look at the Deep Strike rules on page 95, you'll see eight paragraphs. Paragraphs five through seven are the paragraphs concerning disembarking from a deep striking transport. Apparently the sub-heading suffered a perils of the warp and was destroyed.

Haha, thanks for that, was scouring the vehicle section rather than the DS section.

Even the Black Templar book on page 22 says no:

"Once the drop pod has landed, the hatches are blown and all passengers must immediately disembark. The passengers may not move (other than to disembark) or assault in the turn they land. They may shoot but count as moving. "

Too bad it would make up for the crappyness compared to the regular Space Marine ones.
