The question is as the title suggests.

While I truely doubt they count as retinues, and as such contribute a kill point when they are killed and another when the retinue is killed, my friends wanted me to ask about upgraded characters being the upgrade talked about in the retinue section.

It states on page 48 that the retinue character counts as an upgraded character and is an IC when all other members are killed off. I honestly think they do not count as two kill points as they are upgrades, but not in the same sense as a broodlord is for the tyranids. My buddies wanted me to ask, and while I do think an accurate answer is important, I don't think that I necessarily need to as GW this question.

So along with my previous question, in your opinions, what is the difference between a retinue (such as a broodlord) and upgraded character (Tellion and Snikrot)

Broodlord has the IC Rule. That is why.

Do the rules for the Broodlord's bodyguard refer to it as a "retinue"? And is the Broodlord an Independent Character?

Either of those would be an obvious start.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Heh, in actual fact, you are right on the Money. It has the IC rule and has a "retinue of 5-11 Genestealers".

Telion and Snikrot are just special named upgrade chars like sergeants. They are not ICs, so they are not a case where the retinue rules are applicable.

Always 1 on the crazed roll.

Thats honestly what I thought, and I had mentioned that I thought they were reading into the rule too much. This discussion came about from looking at the FAQ from the BRB (as of march 2k9) at GW's website and the command squads (trying to keep this topic out of here as it is a horse of a different color) being a retinue and we were trying to figure out what exactly was a retinue and what was not. I am of the thought that to be a retinue, the figure must have the retinue rule and must be an IC when the retinue is killed.

It does not have to have the retinue rule, however it des have to have a rule which prevents the IC from leaving until the retinue is killed.

In addition it helps if the IC is an IC: Skinkrot and Tellion are not, so therefore they cannot have a retinue.

Just out of curisosity, what rule (other than the retinue rule) prevents a figure from leaving a unit that could normally do so?

And for further clarification, just remember, IC's count as 'upgrade characters' as long as they are in a retinue.

Just out of curiousity again, are you saying that they dont actually get the IC attribute until the retinue is killed off?

Correct. Pg 48 under 'Retinues'.
