GW US commissioned me again to make this years 40k 'ard Boyz tropies.

This time I was able to have time to take better pics. John Shaffer of GW will be painting them.

That sword looks pretty bad, the other two are nice however me thinks clear plastic is a paint to paint

They are made of 1/4" cast acrylic sheets and hold paint very well, clear or not.

The ork design itself is easy and any competent builder could do it. Its just slab sided construction. It's the materials and scale that make it hard. Cutting 1/4" cast acrylic by hand is too time consuming to make the cost reasonable. I happen to own a laser cutter so thats a big advantage. Plus large grinders, torch work and solvent glues involved and it's messy (but fun).

Share for the forum to see.

are they a rough finish, or am i painting wrong:( I always get paint pulling away from itself on clear plastics....

Oh and to be more constructive, my main gripe with your sword is the font guard plate is bent at an angle, i'd like to see a more rounded hand guard, and the handle and guard just seem a bit weedy.

.

When I paint acrylic I hit it with 320 or 400 grit then use auto primer as a base.

I don't have a problem with the hand guard angles, I see orks just bashing it together, easier to bend it then take the time to do a curve.

I went up a size larger on the hand grip then I started with. Maybe really oversize next time. It;s a crazy balance scaling up GW stuff so it still looks "right"

Oh and it does dakka dakka dakka really well

Indeed. I thought they look pretty cool. Of course, this being the internet, people would have something bad to say about people giving away free money.

Yeah, really digging the 'constructive criticism' after the OP mentioned 'GW US commissioned me again'.

You'd have thought that alone would have indicated this poster was not seeking a commentary on how to improve from people completely unused to the medium he's working in.

We really need more armchair quarterbacks on dakka...

Posting on the internet is basically the same as saying "Hey! Critique this for me!" if you didn't know.

I love the chainsword. Looks detailed about right. The guns look a bit too clean, but the photos aren't too big, so any nicks and dents might escape me. Otherwise, the painting will sort that out and make them proper gubbins.

They look cool! The only a little wonky is the guard on the choppa.

I don't mind good criticism. If I do them again for next year I'm gonna improve the hand guard.

Because of the material and lighting its hard to see all the details in the acrylic. All the surfaces were roughed up and gouge marks added. I'm looking forward to seeing them finished by John. This project original came about after some GW staff saw a replica I did of a blade runner gun. They wanted to see about getting Ork stuff done as trophies instead of the usual plaques. To keep costs under control and make sure they would get green lighted we decided I would make them but have GW paint them up.

Gee i forgot that aside from the hand grip that is exactly what an eldar chainsword looks like!, man how could i have been so dumb, geez you really told me. Funny thing when pics are posted on a community forum, people tend to have opinions and will often share them. I found his response very clear and now understand the OP intent. but then i got some armchair quarterback patrolling the forms looking for posts to crap on. It's odd, cause i was reading in other posts how you crapped on them too, real constructive stuff, thanks for being the Dakka hero

Still though... you said his sword looks 'pretty bad'. Needlessly negative IMHO - you went on to say that you would prefer a more rounded hand-guard. Your opinion of course, but not really in keeping with the 'Orky' aesthetic, as one or two people pointed out. You seemed to get a bit hysterical after that...

When you post opinions in a public forum, they too are open for constructive criticism. Relax a bit.

I like them. I could see that as a most orky sword once its properly painted.

Lets remember people these are trophies mockups. They're not meant to be something you could actually Dakka with.
(although big enough-you could put a .45 into the bottom one-now THAT would be a surprise!)
