I only have 87 different projects going on so I may as well start a new army. Thinking of getting back into Necrons. For the record before anyone says it, I don't play tourneys and could care less about "competitiveness" and I don't mind losing as long as the game is fun. That said, I still want an army that will be fun to play with and might help me win sometimes

I had an army a while ago when they were first re-released, but sold them about a year later to make room for more toys. I just really like the models and fluff and my painting skills have advanced a lot over the years and I plan to make them look very old and rusted out. tons of weathering with washes and powders and all that fun stuff. Or, another idea I had is like black wrought iron, but super heated and red in the cracks, almost volcanic looking. Haven't decided which way to go yet.

anyhoo, so, what do I want in the army? My first thought was to just go with the Necron warrior phalanx box set that has $330 worth of stuff for $200. A lord w/ orb, 48 warriors, 6 destroyers, a bunch of scarabs and a monolith. Says it's a 1500 pt army and seems like a decent start. Is it? is it too many warriors? or too many destroyers? If I'll use all that in most games, what could I add to it to just move up to 2000 pts (thats the level most of my club plays at). A 2nd monolith? heavy destroyer(s)? Immortals? a 2nd lord? I thought about converting some of the warriors into destroyers and flayed ones, so I don't have to buy the metal guys. Not sure about wraiths and tomb spiders as I kinda wanna stay away from metal if I can, due to cost and I just like plastic better.

So any thoughts?

The warrior phalanx is probly the best way to start, I got mine to add to the ranks. For a 2000 point army a second monolith with more warriors is the way I would go. Wraiths are a waste of points IMO unless your doing a wraith wing army or city fight and tomb spiders are mediocre at best. If your really wanting to do just a have fun army, try out pariahs. Yes they are a big point sink and are not necrons but I swear by them. But unless you can get them for a good deal ($10 per pariah is steep) then I wouldn't bother.

Hope this helps.

ok thanks, thats kind of what I was thinking, more warriors and another monolith. what about unit sizes? keep em at 10-12 models or go for the full 20? 20 seems like it might be a bit unwieldy, I used to run guant-heavy nid lists and those big units got to be a pain after a while.

I will probably just convert immortals and flayed ones. I'll just use the extra gun from the flayed ones to make the double barrel immortal guns, and then make some claws out of plasticard strips for the flayed ones.

I keep warrior units at least 10 strong, 12 at the most. The problem I find with more than 12 is if you phase through the monolith you are tightly packed and asking for a battle cannon or any other template weapon to hit you.

I convert all my flayed ones and immortals from warriors, most of the time I find they look good or even better than the regular models.
