....What is the deal with assault weapons on vehicles?

e.g.

If I have an ork Battlewagon with a main weapon and 4 Big Shootas, which rule takes precedence - the rule that says if you move at combat speed you can only fire one main weapon and any defensive weapons? (As Big Shootas are strength 5 that would rule them out) Or the rule that says you can move and fire as normal (as they are Assault 3 an Ork on FOOT could move and fire as normal - is this the case for vehicle mounted Big Shootas?)

Sorry for the noobish question

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Other than ordnance, weapon type on vehicles matters very little (if at all).

Vehicle rules are more specific than general rules, so the vehicle rules are used for vehicles - including firing.

The vehicle rules take priority. As Kirsanth said, it is a moot point because the weapon type does not matter at all for vehicles unless it is Rapid fire or Ordnance or Ordnance Barrage.

Hmm, ok let me rephrase that:
Being Heavy Does not matter, they may move and Fire heavy Weapons. All other weapons fire as normal, with the exception that they are able to fire more than 1 weapon at once.

Got you - cheers guys!

Seems counterintuitive - you'd think you'd be able to rattle along blazing away at anything and everything in your path, but have to stop to fire larger, heavier guns. Y'know, aim, load and fire - calibrate instruments etc.

But hey, this is GW we're talking about.

Well not to defend GW but that is actually the intention of combat speed vs cruising speed. If infantry are moving 6" while "stopping several times to scan the surrounding landscape for enemies, communicate with their commanders, etc." then a vehicle is most definitely also moving much more slowly and stopping periodically as well.

Granted in game you only resolve the firing at the end of the movement, but I think we can all agree that it's not intended to be as static as that. The Russ probably fired it's battlecannon halfway through its move, then sprayed its heavy bolter a little later.

The ability to fire any number of str 4 weapons, even at cruising speed, regardless of other weapons fired matches nicely with the "rattle along blazing" motif.

Works for me anyway.
