This is (almost) always the case with "Master painter", "Pro painted" , "´Evy Metal" or all other superlativ´s on ebay.

If I really wanted to buy a expensive model on ebay, I would search for it on CMON, since they have a "ebay-selection" in their search engine. You also see the scoring of the model.

If you looked at all the stuff listed on eBay as "pro-painted" those would fall into the upper half. Sure, its not going to win any Demons, but it isn't crap. I think he could use a better camera or some better shots.

They are painted well, but i don't think they're nowhere near crap though.

But, then again they aren't up to the usual master standards out there. The photo's are extremely blurry too.

I wouldn't pay that much for one of them, but they're nicely painted model's.

They must sell though...

I agree there not crap , are they award winning no , but there better than what a lot of people can do on there own . If you can sell your models that does make you a pro painter .

I like to use descriptors other than the usual "pro", or "master" ones that you see used so often in e bay. For instance, lovingly painted or paintstakingly painted. Mix it up a little.

Pro tips right there!

It's true though. If i see 'pro' or 'master' in a title i start to look at real pro and master painted models out there. I then judge his models by those, usually leading to me thinking 'hang on a minute...they're good but not master standards.' I think its better if you look at your model's critically and be honest about the level that they're painted then say "lovingly painted or paintstakingly painted" or even "too a good standard". But then again i suppose you have to have confidence in your ability.

I dunno about being able to sell painted models makes you a pro, i suppose it does my definition but you could paint models 'only' to a table top standard and people will buy them...I see your point though Slann.

Bleh, i give the guy credit though (again) as he is selling them.

The person has skill and has been doing this for years, but I hate their style. They seem to favour a limited palete and doesn't often paint smaller details like gems and lenses and in the calgar model for example, has painted the entire stormbolter blue.

Yeah, that Calgar looks like crap... it's an unfinished model. The colors that are there are pretty well done, but that Clagar is just lazy.

The figs weren't awesome, but they were above average from what the majority of gamers field. Superlatives and assorted adjectives aside, the prices seemed reasonable too. $35 AUS for a figure that was in the realm of $20. $15 for cleaning, painting and basing isn't outrageous. The minis are clearly for gaming and not sitting in a cabinet somewhere for everyone to oogle.

They dont look that bad, that person paints better than i do. All the faces look deformed though. the only i would buy is the thunder fire cannon.

By definition Professional = A craft, hobby, art, career in which you do to support a living and/or lifestyle through making, selling, preforming, and/or making a profit.

So he could be the worst painter as long as he is selling them he is consider professional painter, but "MASTER" Painted no, I am disgusted by the faces on some of the models, I must admit some of the terminators look pretty good, but then again my blind dumb dog could highlight terminator armor plate if I tapped a paintbrush to her paw, list it on EBAY as master painted and people would believe it.

this has been an ongoin' debate on many forums...

it's gotten to the point, over the last couple of years, where addin' "propainted" to the title has become laughable...
it really sucks for those of us who work as painters in the industry, and go to sell minis on ebay in our spare time...

i use "beautifully painted" in the title, and then list the companies that i've worked for in the item of the auction...

i've seen some really poorly painted "propaint" minis, and some good ones too...
the main thing to look at is the price asked...
this guy is chargin' 1/4 what i would charge to paint the same mini...
of course, this is my basic standard:

for a real example of what should be called "pro-painted", this is the basic quality i painted to when workin' for Privateer Press:

as for "master painted", there have been some guys online who called themselves master painters, and were awesome painters, but they still got laughed out of the building...

if something sells, more power to 'em...
it's just a shame that people don't have to earn their titles online...

cheers

Jah, I think your views of the industry are bound to be a bit skewed, literally being a professional painter.

Ultimately, you have to ignore any buzzwords people throw around; they're likely to say whatever they think they have to to get you to look or buy.

Step 1: find a selection of the minis you're interested in; ignore the title of the auction, it helps no one.
Step 2: compare prices to the pictures; careful here, not all photographers are created equal.
Step 3: buy that which best fits into your criteria (or don't).

there, my comprehensive guide to buying painted minis!

tekken wrote:the paint job are crap for a pro standard!!!
this sentiment always annoys me. When will people learn that "professional" means "paid for his work"; people INFER a standard of quality from the word that's not really there. He is selling his work, ergo he is a pro painter. 'nuff said. Though I DO agree that "master painted" is a pretty self-aggrandizing term for his work, however much better it may be than my own.

i look at his stuff sometimes. as far as pro painted goes his stuff is pretty good, not GREAT, but his stuff is OK in price sometimes.

Man, I just paint for fun then sell the minis, since I don't really need them for anything once they're done. But if you like his prices you should see my auctions, I think 23 bucks is the most I've sold anything for. And I consider myself a better painter than that guy.

I just suck at making money I guess.

Is your post for real?- that is the main question. I thought those figures looked darn good. There are many of us who are are not novices but still aspire to be as good as those pics. "Pro Standard" is very subjective- for some reason you must mean it means "best in the world...better than GW catalog painters". Nonsense. Why don't you just worry about your own painting instead of knocking down someone else's. Silly waste of a thread. I say when someone asks for feedback or critique on this site, then offer your two cents, otherwise keep your opinions to yourself...ridiculous.
