Does anyone have any tips or ideas for a monolith?

I did a search and came up with one amazing scratch build that I have NO where near the talent to make.

I would definately try to search yahoo or google groups for templates. The straight edges of monoliths make them ideal for scratch building.

Also I would try to order bits like the guns and neon clear plastics parts through a bits site as it will make the model infinitely more real and like the GW one.

Don't sell yourself short! Give it a try, make mistakes, learn from them. Use cheap material to practice, like cereal box card board and work up to plastic. Keep you eyes open for anything that can be appropriated and used to help with the build, I had a chunk of styrofoam used to pack a tv that was perfect for a gigantic sized Necron monolith (now destroyed sadly) Don't give up, just think of satisfaction you'll get from a perfected piece and the admiration you'll get when you field that bad boy.

For best freshness, please use this sig before 06/14/95

I've got paint in my veins by this point, so it's really too late to stop...

Oh! Oh! a square plastic plant pot could make an excellent start. I think that's the right shape IIRC

Haw, Blam!, you're half way done.

Here is WIP of a monolith I did. Monoliths are very angular so scratch build easy. I use .04 styrene and just layered it.

Dude, that is pretty sweet.

How long did it take you, and what did you specifically use for it? Very nice work on the detail, I am not sure if you did all the patterns on the black by hand, but it looks like something you picked up from a store. Is that all .04 styrene?

I think that the planting containers would be a bit steep for a Monolith shape, but you could take a look at the GW models to check.

thats pretty damn cool, though it seems a touch short for some reason, though that could just be because theres nothing next to it to show size i guess

That is really cool, and the amount of time that it took you from start to finish is awesome. How are you going to do the weapons on it?

The model looks much better than the original!!

I faced an opponent who's monolith was a bunch of Yu-Gi-Oh cards taped together in a relatively similar shape. In the spirit of WYSIWYG I didn't let him use it.

If you put some real effort in and it looks right, I say go for it. The previously posted scratchbuild is an excellent example, and I would most definitely be happy to play an army with something so cool. I'll second the suggestion to get the weapons through a bitz site though, especially the big green ringpop looking thing on top.

All the white is .04 styrene. The black was laser etched acrylic but it could have been styrene, acrylic just etches cleaner. It is the same height/width as a GW monolith.
