I've been painting my eldar using Foundation Astronomicon Gray for the past two weeks and a Crimson Fist-like marine chapter with Mordian Blue the week before that and I've noticed my brushes are much more raggedy between rinses and cleanings and that the paint clings to the bristles after rinsing requiring a good cleaner more often. I use Master's brush cleaner, which I highly recommend to any painter, and I condition the brushes to preserve their shape, but I'm noticing that some of the build up has become a permanent fixture and I'm worried about the brushes becoming ruined as a result. I know the Foundation has a heavier pigment load for more thorough saturation on the surface which is probably the cause, aswhen painting with the regular Citadel or Reaper Master Series I never have this issue - it's only with Foundation.

Anyone else experienced this problem? Any solutions or recommendations to prevent the wear and tear?

edit: PS: what do you think GW would do it I asked for replacement brushes due to the damage caused by their paint?

I don't buy GW brushes, so I'm not producing sales on that front for them but I wouldn't put it past the evil empire to commit such foul treachery!

Hehe, seriously though, thanks for the warning. I don't use GW pigments, and I'll be sure to avoid them in the forseeable future if they have a habit of rapidly deteriorating brushes.

They are most definitely harder on brushes, as the higher pigment ratios mean there is more stuff in the medium to rub against the brushes.

I do a two-brush system, where one brush is used for foundation paints (undercoating) and drybrushing, and the other is used for more precision stuff. As the nicer brush eventually gets a little raggedy, it turns into the basecoating brush, and I get a new detail brush.

I do the same as redbeard really, except i have my foundation brush, a drybrush/undercoating brush, my standard brushes and my ink/wash brushes lol

the foundation paints are pretty harsh on brushes, as i found out after having to use a small brush, which in turn ended up ruined after 20 models -_-

I think I might need to use that system Redbeard. My wife bought me the W&N Series 7 as stocking stuffers for last year's Christmas and I'm sure the brushes will last until then.

Metallifan, some of us have more hair than others. I could easily spare some of mine, but one wonders at the quality of human hair paint brushes.

In the movie The Red Violin, the maker of the violin used a brush made from his wife's hair to apply the varnish.... mixed with her blood.

It's not the pigment ratio gents. It is the fact that the paints dry much faster than the normal GW line. So, wash your brush about twice as often while working with the same Foundation paint.

I use a combination of Redbeard's multiple brush approach and Todosi's paint-rinse-repeat. Works ok for me

I'll second that the foundation paints dry much faster than the regular GW paints. I have found that the drying time is so short that I cannot paint without thinning them considerably as they dry too fast.

In addition to being too thick to work straight out of bottle this thinning in addition is really required. Otherwise the finish coverage and colors are really nice.

I also thin them because they're entirely too thick out of bottle, but maybe because I add flow improver/drying retarder I don't have issues with them drying out too quickly. Then again I don't take more than a few drops of paint at a time so it generally gets used before it starts drying anyway.

I'll try the two-brush method and keep rinsing and cleaning... :(
