Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

I was pretty rude last night to a friend of mine in the store...because he was irritating.

He's one of those aquaintances you've got that everytime you see each other at the game store...you f@ck with each other. Sort of like a verbal fight for "Alpha Male" status but with each of you with a smile on your face.

Now, when I got to the store last night to play in our weekly Blood-Bowl league (within which my new High Elf Team is having a rough time due to being a first season team up against teams that have been playing forever....). The store was really busy and a bunch of guys I knew were there...and my BB match was there early so instead of milling around saying "Whats up" we got to it.

Now, I'm feircely competetive. When I'm playing a game...any GW game...the game and my opponent have my FULL attention, to me that just seems proper.

It was the beginning of the Second Half and I finally got to recieve a kick off. I had just begun my drive when that aquaintance of mine hollared at me from across the busy store. "WTF Shane, your pig a$$ (I'm a Deputy Sheriff) can't say 'hello' when you come in?". I gave him the compimentary upwards nod because, 1. I was busy and REALLY into the game, 2. My opponent was ALSO into the game eager to stop my drive. He kept on with trying to get my attention at which point I reached up and waved him off (you know, using the motion like you're brushing something off with your hand)

"Oh, that's it you don't wave me off!" then talking to someone else he was in conversation with..."Now I gotta go f@ck with him during his game." He makes his way towards my table attempting to get my attention with playful but annoying intent.

I said "DUDE! I'm trying to play a game here. Leave me ALONE!" At which point he finally backed off.

I know he had friendly intentions, but what is so difficult about leaving two guys alone when they're engrossed in a game? There were other interruptions last night but for the most part people kept their interruptions short and sweet.

I feel a little guilty for being as short with him as I was, but when I'm playing...I prefer to be left alone.

A little lesson in game store ettiquette here. If two people are playing a game, dont attempt to take one or the other's attention away from their endeavor. By all means greet them, say hi, and interrupt if you need to, but whatever the reason for your interruption, be brief....they're busy.

To the friend of mine last night. Sorry I was a jerk, but please, not while I'm playing....

I think that was spot on, if you all know each other then thats fair enough, but otherwise that would be distracting and proberly annoy your opponent who is thinking "why can't it wait until after"

I seem to be in the minority here but I think maybe you were a little too into the game. I could totally understand your annoyance if it were a tournament game but I've been known to shoot the breeze with others during games.

Maybe you should have said something right when you walked in, maybe they should have noticed how into the game you were. Sometimes these things happen, and we just gotta try to remember we're all friends here and we're just wanting to play games with toy dollies.

to ve honest, i like to mess about in friendly games, me and mates allways joke about while playing, otherwise we get too competative.
In a more serious game we still mess about with eachother, just not as much

No offense , but " Its just a game " is not an abnormal thing to say , and especially NOT in this situation.
Why is it getting blown out of proportion again?

Because its a storied forum dedicated to a game. Its like saying "He's just an author!" at a meeting of your local Shakespearean Society.

To put things in perspective, I've been on here (under one name, or another) since I was 11. I'm now 23.

This phrase I think is very insulting and annoying and should not be used. NOT because this is warhammer forum (of course it's a game but we love it!), but because the implications in the phrase are very patronising, the sort of thing that parents will say to their children, and insulting - implying childishness in the person. That's my opinion anyway...

In regards to the topic. I actually agree that you might be taking it too seriously though - I think the game should have socialising as priority no.1 and the game second. However, from your what you've said your friend was being very annoying in a situation where he could probably easily tell that you didn't want to be disturbed so I can sympathise strongly with your reaction.

I would have a chat with your friend, apologising for your over-reaction but at the same time sort out the problem so that he doesn't disturb you when you're into a game again.

Yes, I agree with this, to just type in large letters a throwaway statement like that seems trite and poorly thought out. I hope it didn't upset Shane too much.
No offence to Luna tho, just saying. I know Luna was trying to be funny, others might not realise this, as the poster above has shown.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

I was more insulted when GBF said that I've got issues.

....I'm starting to learn to skim over his posts without actually paying attention though now...I highly recommend that approach.

As far as the rest, people seem to agree with me on the subject at hand, since Luna and friends are in the minority here, no sweat.

While playing a game, you should be allowed to play it without SERIOUS interruptions. Thats what you're there to do in the first place right?

I can see that if you are playing in a tournament it's fairly obvious that players don't want to be disturbed and you have time constraints. I don't see the big deal in a pickup game though. I think it's fairly typical for people to stop and chat for awhile. Maybe it is a crucial / critical moment and you need to focus though. I would just say "Hey friend I've got to keep my focus on the game right at this moment. Let me get back to you a bit later. I'll let you know when. It's good to see you too and I apologize for being brisk with you."

a lot of people hang out at the stores to socialize as well as play games. It's just part of being there in a casual envirnoment.

I'm not sure whether I live in the same world as you... - who talks like that? Even as a hyperthetical point it's extreme...

A more realistic approach is to shove them off and say you'll talk after the game.

In my opinion...

I found a sexy girl sleeping under the games table one Sunday morning, it was my then housemate's girlfriend's older sister. The idea of keeping one permanently under there was tempting.

The 'its just a game' is fine and all, but try saying that during a sporting grand final - and I dont even mean to the players. A passionate spectator will probably knife you!

I think if you are playing a game that has your attention, you are fully in your rights to put up the 'quiet please' sign. Your mates should either respect your concentration or get over it when you get cross.

It was only Blood Bowl... come on now. It was a league game though. I heard the online game is okay, that way you are not potentially distracted. Problem sorted.

Yes, it's just a game, but it's pretty rude to interrupt a person when they are occupied. It doesn't matter if it's tiddlywinks or open heart surgery, when a person is clearly occupied, the polite thing to do is maybe yell and wave and wait for them to be done. it's bloodbowl, no turn last longer than 3 minutes and you can say hey then.

@ Shane: there's simply a class of guy that needs a little smack on the nose now and then. Good guys, they mean well, but they have low situational awareness, and sometimes they need to be reminded that what they're doing is inappropriate. I didn't catch it, but next time you see him just say "hey, sorry I snapped, but I get into my games and I couldn't stop to chat." If he holds a grudge, that's his problem.
