Hey there guys,

Putting my situation out here first: I'm a student, I haven't yet found a job so I scrounge off my old pocket money and some savings... (I'm sure that last statement is going to bring me a lot of hate? ) At any rate, I was wondering if anybody had tips for those of us that are simply either unable to pay for Warhammer or hoping to save some money doing so...

I personally paid for my last army with savings I built up over a year and hadn't spent on anything; so it was more of a "lump sum".

I guess what I would nominate as starter suggestions are:

If collecting Marines or Orks, get your grunts from Assault on Black reach; you can find sites selling squads from it all over the web...

E-Bay can also be a wonderous place (but I went into my overdraft after one spree in which I demonstrated little in the way of self-restraint...

Buy second hand models and clean them up? I hear you can apply certain types of nail varnish to remove ill-applied paint?

So, does anyone else have anything to contribute? I imagine there isn't some paradise where you can get Marines a-quid-a-piece (that'd be the day); since GW controls the distribution of their products... but, who knows; maybe there are some good thrifter's tips out there?

If you are prepared to do some Conversion work, go a Nurgle Army 40k army.

You can scan ebay for regular marines and chaos marines going cheap, you can 'recover' those marines painted/assembled by 4 year olds, as any unrepairable damage can be 'nurgalised' with judicious application of greenstuff and spare chaos spikes.

Orks are a great army in this regard.

AOBR has already been mentioned as a good source for boyz. Also, the new GW kits are a gold mine for conversion work. The new lootas kits allow for 4 regular lootas or 4 flamers, and a big mek with KMB, BS, or RL. But! If you have some extra boyz around, you can easily use the extra bits to make both some lootas and some burnas.

Also, conversions are easier with orks. Not because they can look crappy and still fit in (look around for some truly horrendous Ork trukk/BW conversions) but because they tend to accumulate bits VERY quickly, especially with the new kits.

I also find them to be a ton of fun, but YMMV.

I suppose you could argue buying the battleforce is good for saving money especially since you can convert the marines to sternguard, as well as getting a rhino, some tacticals or more sternguard and some scouts.

For HQ characters i'm using normal marines instead of buying their models (Example i'm going to get a stormbolter and some preties for doin Pedro Kantor)

saves few pennies.

Never, EVER buy from the GW store. You can always get cheaper on-line.

Plan your army list with price in mind. Know exactly what weapons, etc you get in every boxset and plan to maximise your use of them.

I guess while you do that you would probably make the monolith out of the boxes those sprues come from
