I was flicking through my friend's IG codex the other day and noticed that a Guardsman's wargear includes a lasgun and a close-combat weapon . Does this close-combat weapon give them an extra attack? I think it may, else they wouldn't have included it. If that's the case, would not a Space Marine's bolt pistol give him an extra attack? If it does, what would be the point of giving the Sergeant a chainsword and bolt pistol? The rules book says you can only ever claim one extra attack for an additional weapon. Wouldn't that just give the Sergeant his one extra attack and deprive him of his boltgun?

Someone, please explain

You only get an extra attack for having two close combat weapons, not for just the one.

A guardsman has a single CCW. This gives him no bonus, meaning he uses his one attack in his statline.

A Space Marine has a bolt pistol, which acts as his CCW at this moment. This gives him no bonus, meaning he uses his one attack in his statline.

A Space Marine Sergeant has a chainsword and a bolt pistol. The chainsword is his first CCW, the bolt pistol acts as his second CCW. Therefore, he can claim one additional attack for having two CCWs.

Why the Guardsmen have a CCW is not known. Perhaps it is to avoid the "he has no CCW how does he attack in CC" questions that popped up before, or perhaps in 6th only models with CCW can attack. Who knows.

It seems to me that a lasgun makes a better club than a gun, I dont get why anyone would ask how a model with a rifle and no CCW gets an attack in melee.
