I have begun to re-do my Tyranids. However this time around I want to re-paint in accordance with a set army list. Hopefully I would like to have around 1000pts (or more) done by Christmas or thereabouts. I have a fairly widespread collection of 'Nid models so pretty much anything is go for this army list.

Currently I know I want to have: Broodlord (who is based off my old 3rd ed. lictor model, and so has flesh hooks and feeder tendrils), and a brood of 12 (classic) genestealers. Other than that I do not know what Nid builds are semi-competetive or what else to have in the army. Suggestions/advice as to what to include/list in my 1k army are very welcome!

That might be too many genestealers in the retinue. At 1000 points, that is going to be a good chunk of your army that one ordinance template can pretty much splatter.

As it is, the only really competitive Tyranid forces out there are the Monstrous Creature and Outflanking Genestealer lists.

At 1000 points though, a bit of variety might be able to be thrown around.

The limit on Genestealer Retinues is 11. The 12 'man' group is just a troop choice that I'd really like in the army. Then I'd have another smaller 5 'man' group as a ret. for the Broodlord.

And variety is definitely something I'd like. I don't mind losing every other or 2/3 games so long as the list is fun to play and has a variety of troops in it. Its like Raveners though. They are so cool, but awful on the board

Use Warriors. They are far better than most give credit for, especially CC variants with Leaping.

You can have a couple small squads of Warriors and some genestealers, with maybe a cheap Carnifex. Good times.

Right after some tinkering I have come up with this list:

Broodlord 70
Feeder Tendrils 3
Flesh Hooks 3
with retinue of:
8 Genestealers 128

8 Genestealers (troops no2) 128
Scuttlers 24

Brood of 2 Zoanthropes
Zoanthrope 1 35
Warp Blast 20
Zoanthrope 2 35
Warpblast 20

3 Warriors 42
Scything talons 12
Deathspitters 24
Adrenal Glands 9

8 Genestealers (troops no3) 128
Scuttlers 24

16 Termagants 96

3 Warriors 42
Rending Claws 18
Scything Talons 12
Adrenal Glands 9

Mr. Fex 85
Crushing Claws 25
Scything Talons 8

Total=1000pts

Comments and suggested changes are appreciated.

Your stealers are completly plain. While I understand avoiding expensive upgrades, They should really all have Feeder Tendrils, or Flesh hooks. (both 1 pnt upgrades) The Brood w/ the Broodlord only needs hooks, as the tendril bonus passes right along to broods w/in 2". All other broods in the list might want a 1 pnt upgrade.

For 3 more points you could have a carnifex w/ a BS and Talons. Fex has better range, and far superior melee ability. Same No. of wounds, higher T.

I don't feel these need Adrenal glands. I'd give them Toxin sacs first, seeing as they'll be shooting.

Spinegaunts are better moving cover for warriors, as they are cheaper. Termagaunts do shoot better though.
The warriors might suprise someone w/ leaping. Just a thought.
Your fex might benefit from loosing it's claws in favour of another set of talons, and some biomorphs. Specifically, +1WS, and Toxic Miasma. This will let you hit on 3's and be hit on 4's by most opponents. It'll help you survive longer, and make better use of your high str.

These are all suggestions, not commands or rules for playing nids.

Best of luck, and thanks for playing as 'Nids!

...one amongst untold billions.
