I'm not interested in grand tactics here, I'm wondering what units, rules and abilities in each army are so dangerous that someone who has never played them should know about. I know I haven't played all the armies yet, or read all the codices, so I could get caught with my pants down against some unit I vastly underestimated (such as the Dark Eldar Lord.... after wiping the floor with his warriors that guy took out 2 of my squads...).
So basically, what should people know if they're inexperienced vs any of the armies?

Good question.
Well, I have four competitive armies.
What I watching out for are good army builds of a new army, like the SW.
I'll compare them with my successful army builds.
For instance, the new SW book contains a new unit, Thunderwolf Cavalry.
A basic question for me is how to deal with it.

I would post stuff about the Space Wolves here for others, but with the new codex coming, it won't really matter that much. I'll have to wait until I've read the whole thing and played a couple games before I divulge on that.
I do play Tyranids though and here's something to keep in mind - they really suck at range, but can close the gap between 2 armies very quickly. And don't underestimate Flesh Borers. That massive unit of Guants are going to be firing an assault 1 weapon at S4, AP5 and they get to reroll failed wounds, not to mention they get to assault immediately afterward. And this should be pretty obvious - watch out for the Carnifexes. Lastly, wipe out the Synapse Creatures ASAP.

This is kinda a hard question to answer without writing for days.. The stuff that tends to be hard to predict were unique characters of armies, psykers, or characters with wargear selections.

Adding to whats been said .... Eldar: Karandras with a 10man wraithguard squad and conceal (Stealth +1 to the units cover save for a nice 4+ cover save on a T6 unit) SM: Kor'Sarro Khan giving all Dedicated transports outflank ... every one take a razor back with an Assault cannon. Necron: Destoyer Lord joined to scarabs (also given the Lightning field this isn't a bad CC unit)(This unit also gets stealth so turbo boost and every one has +2 cover save)

Thunderwolf Cavalry seem to be Vindicator fodder. Easy enough, as these things go.

I'm asking what units, special rules, etc that a player should know about if they were facing an army they were inexperienced against. I'm not concerned with every detail, just some of the particularly nasty bits.

The devil is in the details. There's plenty of innocuous looking combinations that will kick an inexperienced player's kiester. The only way to deal with it is to get all the codeces and familiarize oneself with the rules.
