Hey all, long time 40k'er who has dabbled in Fantasy a little bit. 40k is looking a little worn to me lately, and I've gotten the WHFB bug.

I'm assembling a small Warriors of Chaos army (Warriors, Knights, Hounds), likely Undivided or Khorne-centric.

I want to add a unit of Ogres to the mix, since I love the models, and want an excuse to paint them up. The basic question is:

How should they be fielded?

They come with hand weapon. Should they use Great Weapons, or an extra hand weapon?

For a single unit, would you upgrade to standard (since they'll not have ranks), Musician? Would you add the 'mutated ogre' for the extra attack, or is it not necessary?

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions. The group I play in is pretty laid back, so I wouldn't be facing rough/tweaked lists. But I'd like to have something effective on the table.

Thanks!

Small units with not great armor and bad weapon skill need to hit hard when they hit. Great weapons are a way to ensure that your hits wound, and aren't saved. Don't spend points on command, its pretty expensive, and their purpose is to negate ranks by flanking and generating kills.

If the idea is to hit hard, that seems to mean that the upgrade to the 'mutant ogre' for a couple points makes sense for the extra attack.

For the same cost per model, would it make sense to get Chaos Armor for the unit (which I think is a 4+), or is that spending points where it likely won't help (since they come with heavy armor already), and are likely targets for heavy hitters?

well against shooting that is actually dangerous (handgunner, elf bolt throwers) you get -2 armor save, so that 4 becomes a 6. If you are playing vs a large number of S3 bows on the other hand, it might be worth it for chaos armor. The reason why I don't mention it for CC, is most of the time you should get the charge, and will kill almost all on contact. (esp if you get the flank) Also the enemy has a do a large number of wounds to deny you your attacks if fail to get the charge. (though if that should happen they will lose, but you might as well as kill as many as you can before you get run down.)

Leadbelchers as DoW? They aren't exactly good. Short range, misfires, stopping to reload, and average ballistic skill makes them kind of marginal. Well they actually might be better outside of a OK army.

Great in an army that doesn't shoot.

I was going to use some Marauder horse for some very short ranged 'shooting'.

I'm not familiar with the DOW rules, how do they work with the official lists?

I was strictly thinking the Ogres 'Special' entry in the WOC army book. The choice is chaos armor or no? Extra hand weapon or great weapon?

At this point, I'm leaning toward upgrading to a champ, and handing out great weapons. Armor would be a game-time/list decision depending on my opponent.

Any other suggestions?

They don't. They were written out.

The big factor for me would be cost.

If you have the points go bananas.
MOK, GWs, Chaos armour, and 4 with a muso.

If you want a flanking unit that will stomp enemy flankers- 3 Ogres with great weapons and muso.
