I've been thinking about playing Necromunda: what should I get first? What gang should I play as?

Congratulations, that was the stupidest remark the entire wargaming community has managed to produce in a long, long time.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

That's a very vague question. The different gangs have access to different skill sets so they tend to play rather differently. I will give you a quick rundown:

Van Saar
Cheesy...they have regular access to techno and shooting skills which are probably 2 of the best skill sets when combined.

Delaque
Not cheesy, but powerful. These guys have shooting and stealth which can make for a powerful combination later in the campaign. Ambushes galore.

Escher
The females. They excel at close combat having access to swords early on and a nice set of skills (agility, combat and stealth). Of course, don't rely on close combat that early on, wait until you get some nice WS, A or skill bonuses to see who can fulfil the role.

Goliaths
Easily the weakest gang with access to the worst 3 skills (ferocity, muscle and combat). Combat isn't actually that bad, but these guys probably won't survive to get there.

Orlock
These guys are great all-rounders, they have a bit of everything (shooting and combat), so they make a good starter gang.

Cawdor
The zealous bunch. These guys I can't remember too much about, but I think they prefer close combat to shooting, with a heavy preference for flamers.

I hope this helps a little and I will add more later when I get the time. In the meantime I'm sure there are plenty of other dakkaites who can help you out.

This question's been troubling me too. I'm leaning towards the gang who's models I like the most (Redemption) but I've heard they're no good for beginners, so I'm wavering towards Orlock. So model choice could be a factor for you, Nektel. No one can help you with that though.

Redemptionists sound great on paper, but then when you get in a game your Crusaders and Devotees are dropping like flies (since you have to either run the whole time or bunny-hop from cover to cover). If you go with a Crusade the Priest and Deacons make for a slightly more competitive list. The Priest's Inspire is a great ability, but you have to be careful with it.

I would recommend Orlocks or Van Saars to a Necromunda Newbie. Probably Orlocks more so, and that's just because of the warm and fuzzy place in my heart that I have for them. One of the guys in our Campaign group started off with Van Saars and has been inflicting some major hurt on the rest of us. I believe he just slid past me into second. Orlocks are easier to convert (I just used Catachans and Cadian bits).
