I have been searching through posts on different forums and thought I had put this to bed. But after doing a search on Dakka I find that i am still confused...

So please, for the sake of my sanity. Is the following correct...

Skimmers DO NOT affect line of sight. Therefore Skimmers do not give cover saves to anything on the game board.

But Skimmers do still count as a physical model (obviously) so an enemy may not go within 1inch of it unless assaulting, etc..

Is that correct?

Thanks guys.

The statement was not correct.

Everything uses True Line Of Sight.

This includes skimmers, which can claim cover saves as a vehicle, as well as granting cover saves to anything behind one normally.

To your second question: That is correct, one must remain 1" from enemy models.

It seems whoever you quoted was playing 4e.

Ahh ok. Thank you for your post.

I didnt play 4th so I was not aware of the difference.

So Eldar and Tau transport skimmers can drop their passengers behind them. Giving the unit a cover save as well as allowing the unit to fire under the skimmer to target any enemies that may be there (provided you can draw line of sight to said enemy).

Correct?

Thanks again.

Yes, however ifthe skimmer is high enough (for example a Valkyrie) then it is entirely possible for the dismbarked unit to get no cover at all.

The base on a skimmer is ignored for all purposies EXCEPT assault, when the enemy can either contact the hull or the base in order to initiate combat.

Yes, but the skimmer will (almost always) give cover to the units being shot under it. Cover saves go both ways.

Also, skimmers can be harder to draw LOS under than most people ponder in theory - LOS comes from the firing models eyes. So unless the skimmer is high (Valykrie!!), the models low (crouching ftw), or the enemy close (there you go!) it can be hard to get a full unit to have LOS.

Great. Thanks answers it. Thanks guys.

It also leaves me with a lot to think about regarding the best use of wave-serpents.

The eye of terror.

Almost any skimmer that is high enough for an adjacent unit's eyes to see under it also will not provide a cover save either way, as if the models' eyes are clear, their head is likely very clear as well.

Unless you are tricky and ensure that the skimmer ends up exactly 2 atoms higher than their eyes, thus obscuring part of the disembarked units heads when they get fired at.

The eye of terror.

Yes, it definitely falls into the "theoretically possible" realm. But on an actual game table, if you are claiming that a model's eyes are clear for LoS, then it's not likely that any of its head is obscured.

If the skimmer has a back door you can always lower it after you fire ...

... That damn door never stays shut!!!!

Surely 1 Planck length would be enough?

At least its constant....

Really? I'd love for you to quote me a rule that says you can change a vehicle's geometry during the shooting phase.
