Well it looks like my friends have decided to take up 40k, and I figured I'd dust off my old Chaos Space Marine army and show them what's what. I'm in luck too as it seems Plague Marines are a staple of CSM (of which I had many of the old plastic one pose figures).
I first played when I was 14 or 15 under the 2nd edition rules, so going to 5th might be a bit of an adjustment.
So far I can see a lot has changed, and some of it seems for the worse (or maybe I just don't understand the reasoning behind some of the changes). Obviously I've been out of the loop for a while, but it seems like the ruleset just isn't...that good? I don't know, I would have expected a game that plays a little more smoothly from such a big company. Also it seems to have been dumbed down, but then again that's probably me acting like a grumpy old man (yet I'm only 24). The whole 6" standard movement (instead of it being based on the unit), the simplification of wargear and vehicle cards, the thinning down of Codexes (oh man do I ever miss my 2nd edition Chaos codex, that thing was a doorstop). Even the small stuff like not being able to fire into an existing close combat melee.
Anyways my circle of friends have a few armies available: Eldar, Space Marines, Necrons, Daemonhunters, and Tyranids. So far we've just tried Annihilation matches with 500-800 points per army, in a 2vs2 format. Now that we have a better grasp of the rules (and the many many codex based exceptions and exemptions) we'll likely be stepping up to larger games.
But yeah, it's great to get into a game that has such a vibrant and active community. I find it funny how there are accepted "builds" of army lists, that almost reminds me of a mmorpg or something. But it sure beats playing some long forgotten ruleset from the 80s (which I tend to find myself doing a lot).

Good to see someone in a similar position to me; I've just returned too after leaving in 2nd edition rules. The new rules take some adjusting to, but I think I'm starting to understand it. The main problem I had was altering my existing Chaos army to fit the new rules (I had so many now-illegal units that I had to change a lot). It's good you have people taking up the hobby with you, it certainly makes it more fun. Most of my friends gave up years ago, so aside from my brother I don't get too many games now.
Welcome to Dakka, I only joined recently and the people here seem really helpful so far. Great to see another Chaos player too!

Yeah I'm still trying to "see the light" of 5th edition, but maybe I just need to forget all of my preconceived notions from 2nd.
I imagine you had many more units than me, as I don't find the new codex that bad to switch to. Then again I've just done small games so far, and never had much of a WYSIWYG approach...I do miss Plague Knives though, haha.
EDIT:
Oh and I forgot to say it's hilariously awesome that some of the "old timers" are still around at GW, like Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe and so on. I remember reading battle reports involving them, or the creation and evolution of Mordheim, or White Dwarf reaching issue 200.
