Hello! I'm new around here! And new to 40K.
I have bought an Assault on Black Reach and some veteran marines (nothing else! No hobby starter set!) and I'm wondering what I should do next and whether the veteran marines were a good choice. I think they're elites. I know I need another troop choice, two combat squads are bad.
I think I need the codex. No, I'm sure I need the codex. The veterans have given me some good upgrades for my terminators, I'm lovin' the assault cannon!
Any ideas what a new DA player should do next?

Welcome! Buy the DA Codex, read it and go for ravenwing/deathwing armies... The DA codex is hopelessly outdated by the Marines Codex.

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

Does that mean maybe later I should get the SM codex?

I think you should get the SM codex first, then get the DA codex once you have enough models to look at doing a Deathwing/Ravenwing force.

Urk, Ultramarines. I don't want to really spend 92AUD on codexes.

EDIT: I may have to. One of my friends has the SM codex but it's full of Ultramarines!
I should get over that.

Just so you know the halloween chapter in your avatar would use the SM codex. Which these days is all about vulcan (salamanders chapter).

Also if you want a free codex legally you can get the blood angel one of the GW site.. Pretty similar to Dark angels except they are red. Angry vampire space marines compared to moody monk space marines.

The Halloween dreadnought is a joke, it's just a picture I found.
I downloaded the Blood Angels codex and don't have much interest in playing them. 1 of my friends plays them and 1 is planning to.

What style of playing do you like? Do you want an aggressive, close combat army or a shooty one? Do you want a mobile mech army or a static gunline? Do you want lots of bikes and terminators or an army of regular tac marines?

Answering those questions should help you make a decision. Don't get caught up that you have to play UM or DA or BA in order to use that codex. You can make lots of different types of chapters or armies using any of the three books.

I'm currently just going to make a normal one with tactical marines and maybe some deathwing termies. Then I hope to get something like the ravenwing battleforce and make a deathwing and ravenwing force. I heard they work well together.

I don't think I have to play Ultramarines or Blood Angels for the codexes, that's just what they mainly are. They could be quite handy.
I have decided I am going to collect DA and that it finalized because I have bought some veteran marines, and I really like them.

That was confusing.

Deathravens, a combined force between DW and RW, work well together.
Go for it.

Play Codex: Space Marines. Nobody will bat an eyelash if you use Dark Angels models and fluff for codex Marines. Only use the Dark Angels codex if you're going Dualwing, which is all bikers and Terminators. The rules for everything else (save Chaplains) are done better in the Space Marines codex.
