..I think you missed the word "some" out of the thread title.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I have, and the BBC account.

I still don't see where he blames ALL the "dissent" is somehow racist which is what your thread title implies.

Mr Carter told a public meeting there was "an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president".

I'm sure that's true.

I'm sure it's a minority overall and I'm sure there's a huge % of those who wouldn't be happy with anyone as President.

The report you can see here they say they have already disrupted 3 white supremacists "plans" (term used loosely) to kill the president.

But I'm sure their fears are all based on fiscal concerns.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

There is no doubt that this is only a smidgen of the whole population, but it is present nonetheless. This point aside, the administration already addressed this issue in the past few weeks if I am not mistaken. Jimmy Carters opinion is... mildly relevant, but not particularly astounding to hear.

Mr Carter told a public meeting there was "an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president".

Kinda been that way for the African American community every time a rich white guy has been elected, etc. Race for whatever reason is still kinda a big deal.

Carter's judgement was never all that good when he was younger. Now, he is old and mentally doddered.
His puppeteers parade him out to make statements when they need to evoke a mildly relevant image to bolster their current message.

Was "an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity" toward President George W Bush also "based on the fact that he is a black man"? Oh wait, he can't use that prepackaged excuse to dismiss his oppostion offhand. Pluh-leeze. What a load of tripe.

The "sacred halls of government"? Hah! I prefer the fun and games of the UK's parliament.

Every president has had numerous plots against them during their tenure. It comes with the job. That's why they invented the Secret Service all those years ago.

It is kinda amusing how the countries with at least functional govs can at least nit pick and talk about this sorta stuff. The ones who are truly broken won't allow their people the same freedom. The people who speak out against those are made to vanish.

The repeated bungling and errors made by Govts the world over constantly reassures me that there is no huge hidden conspiracy, or elaborate plan for X/Y/Z.

I mean there might once have been but if so then the actual instructions were lost or thrown out some time ago and they're as much in the dark as we are.

That said, yeah, we've got people from all over the globe at the uni where I work and the tales some of them have to tell about gak hole- 3rd-world-country-of-your-choice-here is quite sobering at times.

Buses trains etc might not always run on time but at least they run. Small mercies and that I guess.

Crying racism was probably an unwise move on his part, it's bound to backfire. Fox news will be going nuts over this, I can just imagine Glen Beck pleasuring himself silly over the prospect of having a go at Carter (and Obama) over this. Far better to just demolish their arguments with facts and logic (remember those?) and be done with it.

Ever notice that the only person to never bring up Obamas race is Obama himself? Seriously, I've never heard him mention it once and I wish other people wouldn’t play the race card on his behalf. It's as damaging to Obama as it is to his detractors. More so, arguably.

When was the last time Carter was relevant in national politics? 1976?

For those playing at home, who don't get the reference - he was elected President in 1976, and took office in 1977.

There are a lot of strong feelings there and anytime those strong of feelings are brought into anything it is bound to be bad.

A lot of people have been trying to figure out why the Republican party is freaking out about every thing, so angrily and irrationally. It seems a lot of folk, including Carter, are coming to the conclusion that racism must be a driving factor.

It's no doubt in there, but I don't think it's responsible for most even a significant portion of the recent crazy. I think the Republicans have been getting steadily more angry and more irrational for about 15 to 20 years now, although there's been a really big increase just lately. I think much of what held their increasing crazy together was having power. It wasn't a black man in the Whitehouse that's given them this latest kick, it was losing both houses and the executive.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Yes, thats it. They are acting irrationally. They are clearly racists (carter) and fascists (Pelosi). Fortunately we have places where people like this can be treated, humanely, and gently.

I for one welcome Dear Leader and agree that anyone who disagree with his enlightened policies must be helped to overcome their condition.

Cut the man some slack. He was in the Georgia Senate during the 60's. The fact that he's going to be overly sensitive to racism should go without saying.

Birthers, "YOU LIE!", town hall meetings, etc. all point to yes racism is still well and alive today imo. Sure, not all Obama dissenters are racist but a good chunk of them are and having lived in Alabama, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, and Oklahoma - blacks are still widely discriminated when they're not in the same room (sure some of its relatively harmless Carlos Mencia jokes...most of the time not so much).

When Republican congresspeople say things like they're looking for the next "great white hope" it also boils the blood. I'm not a Democrat but it really baffles me how people align themselves with a party notorious for seeking the interests of old, rich, warmongering, white people but to each their own.

While some may not know any different, Carter certainly should. I don't think anyone with even a smidgen of political savvy would be all that confused as to why the opposing party with a different opposing ideology would disagree with a President from the opposing party trying to enact his agenda (it isn't a dirty word!) with his party in control of congress.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

To all:As someone who kinda sits somewhere in the middle politically I find it funny how you sling racism around but yet refer to" all" republicans and "all" democrats in the same breath. There is a distinct line between the older and younger republicans/democrats. I know plenty of republicans who voted for Obama or questioned Obama on a different basis than just a color. I'v heard younger voter worry more on Obama based on the fact when asked to disclose where he was receiving money he declined. Another being that he has never any term he was elected to. I would be more inclined to the age of the congressman etc. I mean once you are a certain age your beliefs tend to become more concrete and more into the "status quo."

To quote above:
you're using southern states as an example. I mean for god sakes I've lived in Texas and Florida. The racism is enormous on both sides. The harshest day to day statements still come from African Americans. Now the occasional clan wanna be seems to be a bit more vocal and news worthy but don't ever fool yourself and say its all in the white community. I mean the fact that white, african etc are all used to describe folks shows you that there is race issues still around. People who have lived the US for 5 generations still call themselves German American, African American, Mexican American, etc. At this point aren't we all Americans? The example can be used for anywhere, Canada, England, etc. Why are the divisions required? I'm not saying forget your families heritage etc but always proclaiming these things in way that is arrogant can cause some bad feelings. If you want to bet rid of racism you need to take the children away from parents and raise all of the children together. Racism is a learned behavior(which is why the old dogs can't unlearn it) not something you are inherit from birth.

Just watched Channel 4 news reporting on this; cue inadvertent hilarity. The protesters were great, accussing Obama of being a facist, and....um, a communist.

From over here, the Republican party looks insane, and seems to dig its own grave at an alarming rate. Channelling US funds to pay black slave compensation? This is comedy gold.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.
