OK, I just moved back to San Diego, California and got settled in and took my Eldar out for a spin at the FLGS and when I ploped my army down, a nearby gamer asked me if I was playing Apoc, for he went on to add that the only way my army would be acceptable is if it were.

I think my Eldar army is a fun themed list and pretty damn soft, personally, but in this area a lot of gamers have a very weird way of playing the game (in my opinion anyway). They purposefully make their armies weaker to be more friendly. If that is how you want to play, then fine, but don't impose your views on other is how I see it.

Every other gaming club I have been in consitsed of bring what you want to bring, play and have fun. Every now and then people would cry cheese, but only in good humor or extreme cases. Here, certain gamers are such hard core fluff nazis, it is annoying. I for one am against any kind of arbitrary gamer made restrictions on list building. For me, the codex is all that matters in a pick up or tournament game. Here the rule of thumb for some gamers is three of anything is cheese....how arbitrary is that?

Anyway, without further ado, here is the list. I would like to get some other opinions. It plays well and is a lot of fun, but I hardly consider it cheesy:

2,000 pts

Eldrad
Avatar

4 x10 Dire Avengers (no upgrades)
5 Pathfinders
20 Guardians, S.Laser, Warlock with conceal, S.Spear, S.Seer

6 Fire Dragons
10 Harlies, Veil, Kisses

3 x W.Lords, B.Lance, EML

So maxed troops, infantry horde, decent ranged atni tank and counter assualt, nothing crazy in my opinion, plus it looks cool and is pretty unique as Eldar armies go. It is a fun list to play, unlike unkillable skimmer spam, IMO. What does Dakka think?

This doesn't look too cheesy compared to what's popular right now.

The only thing I think is cheesy about armies is when people rely or base all their tactics off of special characters abilities. Which really disappoints me personally as that seems to be the direction the game is headed.

Well, footslogging is a slow way to die.
It looks rather semi-competitive.
Nevertheless, I'd consider it for fun games.

Well, i think the most obvious thing is that the player who said you could only play apoc obviously doesnt know that apocalypse battles are designed for 3000 minimum. :/

In apoc battles you better take a large mech force;
as said, 3000 pts minimum.
Footsloggers are ineffective in those battles.

They Probably think its cheesy because of the 3 Wraith lords. However, thats the base of most Eldar armies and should be. Drop one WL and take some swooping hawks. Theres no way they call and army cheesy if its taking swooping hawks.

Not cheesy in the slightest and only mildly effective in a competitive environment. If they think this is a cheesy list tell them to avoid the tournament scene, those waters ain't safe for small fishes.

I don't really see how this is a cheesy list. The only exception I can think of is running so many Wraithlords- possibly consider dropping one for something else?

I have to admit, I got a laugh out of the Swooping Hawks comment, I've never liked them.

Yeah, the Wraith Lords and Eldrad were the sticking point. It is just silly to me, to think that a player can say what is the "right" way to play more so than the codex.

This army is surprisingly effective, I have not lost with it yet, only tied to Black Templars and Speed Freaks Orks.

The Guardians form a tough screen with conceal and fortune and the WL's are anti tank. The Pathfinders babysit the objective and the Avatar and Harlies are counter assualt. The dragons keep transports at arms length.

The only thing that just scars the crap out of me is template heavy armies like IG, or vulkan marines.

Exactly! This in my opinion, is such a soft list. It is fun, that is why I wanted some more input, I am glad I am not the crazy one.

Umm, what happens if those same players get introduced to the new guard or marine codices, like the hard way?

Since when did a footslogging army at any point level become cheesy in 5th ed.?

Though you on foot, its a matter of time before you list is removed from the board. Personally you have not really had a chance to face a strong army. Then again it would seem that most would try and remove some of you key elements of which they should ignore.

50 guard with a vox would have np removing your troop section while taking the avatar head on and removing him...Grats on your wins so far...

Dosn't look too cheesy, but does look fun to play lol. I guess the Wraithlords are the sticking point, but people need to quit thinking of the WL as a monstrous creature and start thinking of it like a TANK, and turn meltaguns on it or other 'anti-tank' weapons.

I'm wondering though, how are you dealing with wraithsight? Just keep them near eldrad and/or harlies?

Let me guess, everytime a new codex is released around there it CAN ONLY BE APOC!!!

Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

Yeah, most guys in the area are cool, but they just see the game in a really different light than I or most gamers I know do.

I like a challenging game, bring the tough list, if I lose I will try to think of a way to win.

And yeah, IG is the nemesis to my army. Flamers and blast weapons just kick my ass hard.

But like I said, the army is surprisingly effective. I have had more success with it than I anticipated. My other armies are pretty hard (SM and IG) and so I bring this one for laughs, that is why I was so shocked at being called cheesy for it.

It simply isn't worth playing the game against people who think that foot Eldar is "unacceptable". They're either douchebags or just plain dumb, and there are much, much better things you could be doing with your free time.

meh, its not cheesy. its a pretty standard foot eldar list, actually.

the 3 wraith lords I'd consider standard operating procedure for the eldar, and not a big deal. the one thing they might complain about is eldrad, but he really doesn't have anything scary to fortune (except the avatar, and if you have 2 footslogging HQ's without fleet next to each other, the opponent just has to stay away... its not hard).

nah, if they complain they are newbs.

LOL this is the OPPOSITE of Cheese!

Footslogging Avatar horde is fosho fluffy!

If you want to be then ubercouncil that up.

Eldrad in a serpent. Serpent Spam. Jetcouncil = WIN! Don't forget 5 man DA units for taking more WS with TLBL! YYYAAAAY!

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

Thinking about this, that list IS fluffy....sort of.

The might of craftworld (...whatever craftworld eldrad is on lol) is summoned to the battlefield in a massive deployment, even the wraithlords are awoken from their slumber.

(Only thing is story wise, like they said, the list fits a HUGE battle, rather than a small skirmish with random orks, but yeah, as far as unit composition goes it actually is sorta fluffy.)

Edit: Your pole is going for 100% not cheese, that is amazing, never seen that before.
