Both are meltavet spams but i can't see any other good infantry options for the guard to put into chimeras. The standard squads are pretty nice, but paying 105+ pts for a BS 3 squad with 1 heavy weapon and 1 special weapon ánd chimera is a bit too much imho.

The first list has more objective grabbers and is nicer to play with/against I think and offers tactical depth. However, the second list is geared towards a massive burninate assault and close range shooting with a lot of redundant high threat targets that cannot be ignored (2 demolishers, 2 banewolves/hellhounds, meltavets). In addition, a list geared towards anti AV12 will probably tear down the first one pretty quickly.

How are people's experiences with the Banewolf/hellhound though? As i'm not too sure which one to take here. The AP3 is awesome I think, but the extra range on the hellhound might increase survivability a bit.

Note: I have pretty much all the units to make these armies.

Hellhounds definitely. The ability to arrange the template as you see fit can easily double the hits you can get per template. Personally I think both lists have a little too many melta guns. They're effective and helpful, but they can't get the job done on their own. I think you would be much better served replacing a few melta guns with flamers as they will be very helpful against infantry armies and the contents of the transports you intend to kill with melta guns. Don't discount the regular infantry squads either. I typically take a squad with only a flamer in a chimera and they work quite well. While no, they don't have the ability to annhilate vehicles like the vet squad, they are MUCH cheaper, just as durable, just as scoring, and extremely underestimated. Their goal isn't to go out and murder things, but to add additonal firepower against troops, block assaults on the vehicle, grab objectives, and generally go out there to do a job and die. The issue I have with vets is that you generally start to pay a lot of points for a unit thats really easy to kill, especially if they get into melta range.

Wait, i thought you had to take veterans as a part of a platoon.

Nope. Not in the new dex anyway. Vets are seperate troop choices, so you can have up to 6 vet squads, or for example 2 infantry platoons and 4 vet squads.

I would like to ditch some melta's but they do seem very effective in anti MEQ role. Especially if there's quite a few of them. And i don't know, but IG troops die really fast, and for the cost of 2 highly effective meltavets you can take 3 ordinary squads which have a .. flamer.. and since i want the army to be fully mechanised i find it hard to justify less effective troops driving around in fairly expensive chimeras

Sweet, I'll need to adjust my army list. Now I feel stupid.

If your going to have so many veterans, consider giving some of them plamsa guns and/or a lascannon, they' be able to deal with any big scary things with their BS of 4, especially if you add in "Bring it Down!"

The idea of the infantry squads is to make your army harder to kill. It gives you highly expendable units to grant cover saves to your more valuable units, or force the enemy to shoot a cheaper less threatening target, that is just as hard to kill. Stuff is going to die during the game so sacrificing damage output for survivability is sometimes necessary. Don't discount the flamer either. They're absolutely terrific for burning enemies that just assaulted and killed one of your vehicles, which will happen quite a bit when you are playing a mechanized force. I'm not saying to use NO melta vets either, but spamming them will leave your army lacking in the numbers that imperial guard need.
