Subject: Building a light Cavalry/Recon Imperial Guard army

I just got into 40k with the Cadian Battleforce set. I really like the AT-ST like feel of the Sentinels but I read around these forums that they sucked. I know a lot of people play Imperial Guard with basically 10 tanks and as much huge big guns they can get on the table. I wanted go into the opposite direction and go with a foot slogging light mobile infantry/ Cavalry or recon company feel with Sentinels, light weapons, and rough riders. How would I go around doing this? What "light" themed units are good AT? I was thinking of buying a vulture gunship from Forge World for fast quick mobile fire support. I also want to buy a Command or a Scout Salamander because they fit in with the theme of "light" recon, how do these work are they just crappier Chimeras? I also heard there were special "Forge World" rules for a Recon company with Salamanders. What do these do? Basically I don't really have a 1500 - 2000 list yet but I would like to run something along the lines of: 1x Command Salamander from Forge World 4x Scout Sentinals (recommendations for weapons, I'm thinking Autocannons +Hunter Killer missle) 2x squads of 7 Rough Riders 4x squads of 15 Cadian Shock Troops 3x Heavy Weapon Teams (recommendations for weapons, I'm thinking Autocannons) 1x Vulture Gunship (lascannons, and some AT abilities) QUESTION: Is there any difference between the Vulture from FW and the Valkyerie model that is sold by GW? Any help would really be appreciated.

Do you own the new guard codex? If not, that would be the best place to start.
You can build your army using the appropriate codex and using certain choices and conversions, create an army that not only appeals to your style but also could play in a tournament or be played in a new place you havent played before without raising eyebrows.
Its best to stay away from FW optional rule sets, as they are for friendly play only. I highly recommend keeping your army as legit as possble. As some "casual" players you find will still only want to play with people using approved codexies...

So id recommend using the new guard codex to build your army, anything that needs a chimera (like your HQ) you could convert into a more scouty type vehicle. Then take choices such as valkeries, hellhounds and sentinals. Troops could be penal legion, they seem very scouty. They dont have to modeled as criminals, they can be catachan or insurgent style depending on the backround your working towards.
Yours heavies could be artilary or converted russes same as above.

I do own the codex.
I read thru it of course. I'm going to be for the most part using codex units of course. The only unit I really want from FW is the Salamander because it seems exactly made for my army. I don't know how it works though if anyone could help us out.
Also, I'm pretty sure most 40k tournaments allow non-super heavy Forge World units in tournaments.

They allow the "models" provided they represent a choice from a codex well enough.
They do not allow the "rules" so you can buy salamanders and use them "counts as" chimeras but they cant use them as a fast, av12, autocannon transport. Why? Because its not in the codex.

For your HQ, just load up your CCS with some special weapons and stick them in a Chimera.
Rough Riders are nice; I like them as antitank. 85 (?) points get you 5 riders, 2 melta guns, and melta bombs for the sergeant - that's cripple just about any vehicle.
If you can afford a bigger squad, their power-weapon charge will tear up terminators and other elites double their cost. Just don't rush ahead into then: stay behind your lines, and then charge when the enemy comes close: you don't want to get over 100 points shot up before they can do anything.
You can only have 10 shock troops in a squad, just so you know. Be sure to give them special weapons.
Sentinels are nice: gets scouts with autocannons to outflank and pound rear armor, or go armored if you want to tie up squads in CC.

-Infiltrating stormtroopers sound good if you're going the sneaky/scout direction
-a vendetta with 3 twin linked lascannons is a good anti-tank/high toughness vehicle
-on the heavy weapons i'd recommend you put them in a team as autocannons, 6 St 7 shots at 48" are nice for light vehicles and high toughness things
-if you really wanna stick to the scout and recon theme snipers would be cool. ratlings fill this quite nicely (i hate the models, theyre ugly as sin, you could always use spec. weapon teams or proxy)

I assault with my guardsmen, why dont you?

I haven't ever played with any forge world stuff but there are rules for the vehicles they make in the Imperial Armor books available from forge world's web site. I think most people won't mind playing against imperial armor stuff in friendly games. It's always cool to see someone pull out a nice FW piece and set it on the table.
The FW stuff won't be legal in most tourneys so if you're looking to play competitively that is something to keep in mind. Although there are some tourneys that use FW stuff. I think adepticon does.
I'm a fan of rough riders. They are a nice counter charge unit to keep near your infantry line. They are cheap and get the job done. The models are god awful though. They look like ghengis khan rejects. I built mine out of warhammer fantasy empire outriders. It's a better looking a less expenxive option than buying the ugly mongol models. I've seen somebody make rough riders out of space marine scout bikes and cadian models. They look really nice but are an expensive way to go.
Welcome to the hobby, Imperial Guard have a good codex with a lot of options for you to try out.

There are really really good looking Rough Rider models under Death Korp of Krieg that look like European Lancers that I'm planning to get. I would definitely not use the Attlian Models. Is it true that most Tournaments don't allow FW models? What would be the point of getting them then? That's pretty ridiculous. Also I've been thinking Cadian Snipers would fit the theme very well. Anyone recommend adding snipers?
