Subject: Stompa Rules....
|

Elite Tyranid Warrior
|
Hey guys. Playing a game sometime soon against an Ork Army with a Stompa. I have never played against one before & need some reassurance that I am not going to get flattened. Some things I would like to clear up are:-
As it is a walking Tank do the rules for Walkers apply to it? I.E - Do I have to fight against the armour I attack or are the results taken on the back armour as with normal Tanks....?
I know that for Tyranid Gargantuan creatures there is a rule that even in CC they can be shot at, as they are so big. I presume that this is the same for all Titans, although I don't have the Apocalypse book. Are there any rules such as this for Stompa's?
Also, the guy I'm playing is using it in a 2000 point game. I have NO Apocalypse stuff but he assures me that it will not be that difficult to take out. I will only be fighting with a standard FOC. I will of course make my list 'super heavy tank killing' as he has been kind enough to give me a heads up that he is using the Stompa. I was just wondering what the general consensus is. Is it going to be a one sided battle? & using my Guard, will a mech vet list filled with Melta's, Multimelta's (on Hellhounds) & Tanks including Pask in a Vanquisher & a Medusa with Bastion breaches do the job?
Cheers guys. Any help would be great.

I bought a stompa, and me and some friends tried it out too. However, I built mine as the big mech's stompa. The lift droppa is lethal to IG. Otherwise, good luck.
You may also want to discuss how big mek repair abilities affect it before the game, otherwise things might get dicey

Ok since no one else has posted here yet, I'm going to try my best to help, although I haven't read all of the Apocalypse book yet, so wait for confirmation before you take this advice to heart.
First off, the Stompa is taking up 600pts of your opponent's force, so 30% of his resources are going to this one vehicle. The Stompa has some incredibly deadly weaponry, including a cannon with S10 ordinance blast and 72" range. It also has a few other big guns, but the Deth Kannon's the heavy hitter. Of course, it's only BS2, so it's a bit less of a worry.
As for the vehicle itself, it's AV13 in the front and sides and AV12 in the rear. But be careful if you do get behind it to fire on it's back armour, the Stompa has a Big Shoota attached to it's rear end. It has 4 structure points as well - in order to destroy the vehicle you must reduce it's structure points to 0. Read up on these rules on pages 92-93 the Apocalypse rule book, because it could take multiple penetrating hits to destroy the Stompa.
And while it is wise to deck out your Guard with anti-armour, you're still fighting Orks, so don't focus solely on the Stompa or your Guardsmen will be torn to shreds in CQC.

Yeah, a mechvets with a pasquisher will wreck his day, you don't need to worry too much, when it dies so does his force.

I'd be wary of playing games with super heavies outside apocalypse. They can be incredibly hard to take out, even if your army has usually sufficient anti-tank. The stompa in particular is very tough, having 4 structure points and usually carrying a KFF mek, giving it a 4+ cover save. Add to this that it does have enough firepower to wreck most of a normal army without trying and i would suggest that you just play a regular game. Super-heavies are great fun in apocalypse, but tend to be very unbalanced otherwise.
As for the rules:
It is a walker so you will be hitting it on its front armour.
At the end of the assault phase any unit that is in combat with a super-heavy or gargantuan creature is moved 1" away and is no longer considered locked in combat with it, allowing it to move/shoot/assault as normal (and of course allowing it to be shot at and charged again).

I am with Regwon, playing a game with models not listed in the Codex greatly tips the balance of the game. With that said, bring your IG, couple of Vet squads armed with meltas in a Valkrye and Pask in a vanquisher, the Stompa should be a pile of junk in one turn of good shooting and poof there goes 1/3 of his army.

The best way I have found to deal with titans is either piles of melta (mech/valk vets or DS troops) or melee. Unfortunately, IG doesn't have much of the latter, but if you have a unit of terminators with chainfists or some dreads you can DS right next to it, that stompa will be hurting.
Essentially you need a mess of penetrating hits to do much of anything, so plan on dedicating 8-15 melta type shots to kill it in one turn, possibly more if it has the KFF. The important part here is the high volume of potential damaging shots though. Lascannons are not terribly exciting for the price because your chances of getting a 1 shot kill are tiny. You most likely will need 12 penetrating shots to be certain of a kill.
Do note, however, that its weapons can still be stunned/destroyed, if only one at a time, so sometimes just shutting the thing up for a turn is good enough.

If he has the apoc book, which he should if he owns a stompa ask to borrow it, at 2000 points yoou shouldent even be playing apocalypse as its a game for 3000+ points. and I find a suepr heavy in anyhting less than a 5000 point game is like an "I win" button and takes all the fun out of the game for both sides.
Now onto tips for taking it out. Melta vets give them demolitions and a chimera get em close in melta then assault with the melta bombs. if you have them some devil dogs will be very very handy. As stated before a vanquisher with pask is an asset.
The benifit of having and problem in dealing with super heavies is they are masively distructive, easily capable of destroying tripple their points cost and withstanding fire from quadruple ammount of points. Alone their intimidating, supported their devistating. Unless you have a super heavy of your own it will be a big thorn in your eye.

lol Lukey it will be fun, my stompa will stomp all over your little tanks lol.
Seriously man, I've given you some heads up its got 4 wounds and melta will wreck its day. Ok you've got Orks to deal with - bring demolishers
As someone mentioned, it is 600 points out of my army - a fair chunk. Should be fun though!
Oh, and manwithironhands we are not playing apoc game we are playing a normal game with a low point titan (compared to others). I wouldn't use the titan without Klueless' permission, its just a fun game for a laugh

as stated before it will take roughly 12-15 melta shots mathimaticly to completely destroy the thing. Yes one melta can give the thing a bad day, but more than likely it will just stun a weapon or fizzle.
Beleive me a stompa is a pain in the ass to destroy, I beat on one of these things with 5 chain fists for 4 turns before I finally destroyed the thing. Thats probly more due to my luck witth damage results (I seem to knock off all the guns and imobilise things before i finally destroy them).

wont take 12 meltas to take it out, thats means each melta scores 3 times over.
ive fought against a stompa before, they take a lot of punishment but still vulnerable lot other vheicles, just needs killing four times over! lol.

Klueless,
If you have one of the new Imperial Bastions or some terrain you can mount a big gun to, I would recommend counts-as'ing an Imperial Defence Laser with 8 Twin Linked Heavy Bolters. It will cost some 430 points out of your army, but it throws a huge, auto-penetrating AP1+1 pie plate at anything over 60 inches away from it, as well as being able to put out the firepower of the 8 twin linked heavy bolters into the ork swarm, on top of having to be wrecked 3 times before it dies.
Relatively simple to model, not too points-intensive, and it should even up the game a bit. Otherwise, a Super-Heavy with 4 structure points in a 2000 point game is going to bring some pain, or at the very least leave you with an ork army wondering why you brought so much melta and so little flamer.
Unless, of course, it goes nuclear when you kill it. But that is a whole other barrel of worms.
The datasheet for the defense laser is here: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1180090_Imperial_Guard_Datasheet_-_Defence_Laser.pdf
Good luck!

An Imperial Defence Laser is a TERRIBLE choice!
It's got a minimum range of 60" - That's five feet! Nothing will ever be outside of 60", and even if SOMEHOW something was, the Laser will only get to fire once.

I suppose a single Laser is probably too few - I've used them in pairs in smallish Apoc-esque games of 2500ish points which, when combined with keeping my objectives at the foot of each of them, has worked well with a divide and blast strategy.
Its not exactly Imperial, but a Doomsday Device is a cheap way to kill a lot of stuff. Even if you don't get the D6 Destroyer shots result on the chart o' doom (which isn't a terribly common result) the Apocalyptic Blast (4) seems to come up fairly often, and should clear off loads of the Boyz, leaving the reliability of a melta rush to focus on the Stompa.
But again, it goes back to Super-Heavies really having no place in anything under 2500 points. I just checked the book again, and I absolutely forgot about the force fields they sport as well...

i have faced stompas several times and there has alway been three.
i play space marines so some of my tactics won't work but i'll try
i use DPs and Ironclads, to deep strike behind them and melta gun them and then assault them Stompas are I1 while my dreds are I4 so i always hit first 4 S10 attacks and a Melta attack can rip a stompa up.
in your case i would take alot of lascannons for long range shooting, then deep strike a Storm trooper squad with as many melta weapons as you can. you are guard so stay out of close combat, you're Power fists are only Str6 so you can't even scratch it in CC.(and don't think he will forget it)
Beware the Supa-Gatla, It has a pretty goot chance of taking out a stompas worth in points or more in the first turn. stay in cover.
So in short Melta and lascannons are your friend.

Yeah bud. I won. After the stompa fell it was just a case of burning & pie plating everything off the table. Lost less tanks than I expected. I think that the key was the fact that I was running a Mech Vet list against him. I added a few extra tanks, which I don't really like doing as I'm not too keen on Vehicle Squadrons. I felt like I needed the extra fire power in this game though. It came in handy & I just avoided CC like the plague.
Ultimately, to start with I was VERY worried. By about turn 4/5 it was just a mop up job.... Sorry Mercer.... ;D
The exact list I was using (as well as others) is on youtube under 'rambo2base' - Mechanized Vet list.... If your interested.
Cheers guys.
