Hey,

I just unearthed some dark eldar that i used to collect (gotta love rediscovering stuff after you've moved house -.-''). My current army is dark angels that will soon be joined by witch hunters for apocalypse battles BUT i have to say I am curious about dark eldar. I was thinking about how their so far behind in terms of having a new codex (edition 2? lol.) and began to question how they fare in apocalypse? I cant say I'' play them again but it was just curiosity really.

DE has still a good codex even if its not up-to-date.

DE armies are still competitive if configured and played correctly.
I must confess that I played it last time in the 4th ed, two years ago but won an RTT with it.

Are you serious? The models are the worst part of the entire army and should be renewed as soon as possible.

The rules for some of the units (Ravagers, Raiders, Warriors and Wyches) are good though.

Some models are great, some are horrible. Like the archon with that enormous head or mask or whatever it is, it's horrible.

Raider spam is always a huge bitch. Lose the first turn and you can be sure most of your vehicles will be stunned, and they'll be within charge range with wyches in the first turn.

If they had scout, they'd be almost unfair.

If you go 2nd, then leave the whole army in reserve.

In the new codex (if it ever comes), there should be a way to get a bonus on reserve rolls.

DE are still very potent. They took some hits, Wyches can't stay in combat which sucks, but they have access to the most plentiful and cheap BS4 lance weapons in the game.

60 warriors with 2 dark lances each is only 600 points. Plus, Incubus with an Archon is a brutal assault unit with decent resilience. Also, Raiders and Ravagers put the hurt downrange.

The bikes are good too. I think DE are not as bad ass as they were last edition, but they are still very viable. You will surprise some people with the army when you first bring it out and have some big wins.

thansk for clearing that up peeps, I'm still hoping they get a new codex and some new models. I agree that the archon looks horffic (it looks aged compared to the newer models being released for other armies).

Dark Eldar are viable, but I wouldn't bother with the current models.

Tau (for clarification I meant DE here, not Tau) are still quite competitive - if somewhat limited in which lists are truly functional in a tourney setting. But, heck, lots of armies with much newer codices only have one or two viable lists so who am I to complain?

In Apocalypse we...suffer. The affordability of our units comes back to haunt us when it comes to trying to fill out the FoC and our special Apocalypse unit options are not as amazing as one might hope. Still a lot of fun though, and I've never ended up having to play Apoc for competition so fun is all I need on that front.

Edit to appease Freud.

Yeh some of their models are terrible. E.g the archon (how big IS his head?).

This is a DE thread you know? Were you referring to them in the rest of the post? I'm confused.

Interesting. I meant to write Dark Eldar there, not Tau - but as you follow the logic of my post I suppose I'll simply claim it as a Freudian slip that perhaps proves my point.

Simply replace Tau with Dark Eldar for reading needs and the post reads as I intended it.
