The ruins of the Palace of Thorns

I just woke up with an idea for a variant set of rules for Spulk. These are completely and utterly untested, but I thought I'd present them here for fun and comment.

In this variant, a lone genestealer (or other similar fearsome monster) has infested a local dungeon/crypt or similar. Local feudal humans need to go in and flush out this genestealer before it has a chance to breed. The balance has shifted: The 'stealer is now the hunted, but what a dangerous prey it is. Can the genestealer survive long enough to breed, and if not, how many humans will it kill before it falls?

Changes
Genestealer Reinforcement Phase
There are no reinforcements for the Genestealer. Instead, it receives 1 "Cornered Beast" point per turn. At the end of each of his turns, the stealer play may surrender all of his Cornered Beast counters and roll a die. If the number rolled is less than the number of counters, the genestealer may immediately take another turn with 3+D3 APs. (This represents the 'stealer breaking out just as it finally looks trapped and doomed)

Also, see the combat sections later for rules on how the 'stealers relative toughness compared to feudal weapons is represented.

Genestealer Action Phase
Before the 'stealer is first seen, the stealer play may place three "echo" counters. Two of these are marked "false" and one is marked "shiiiiit". Echoes are revealed as per the rules for blips, except false echoes reveal no 'stealer and shiiiiiiit reveals the lone 'stealer. Once the 'stealer is revealed, echo counters are all removed.

If a revealed 'stealer can start and finish its turn without being seen, and not be seen during the turn, the 'stealer player may replace the 'stealer with the three echo counters at the location of the stealer (All three counters start where the stealer was removed, but in following turns they may move independently) and the hunt must begin anew. Only a revealed 'stealer may spend Cornered Beast APs; echo counters cannot use them.

Human Command Phase
The human mob gets no command points
The human player does not have to work to a timer

Human Action Phase
Humans now use the same movement AP costs as the stealer, though they still only have 4 APs
The following costs apply for human weaponry:
Crossbow Reload 0
Crossbow Fire 1
Nock an arrow 1
Fire a shortbow 1
Fire a longbow 2
Set overwatch (crossbow) 2
Set overwatch (shortbow) 1 (arrow must be nocked first)
Close assault 1

Shooting
To represent the toughness of the lone 'stealer, it starts with 12 "wound tokens". It only dies when it loses all of its tokens.
A human firing a crossbow at the stealer rolls 2 dice. If a double is rolled, this is how many wounds the 'stealer takes.
A human firing a shortbow at the stealer rolls 2 dice. If a double is rolled, this is how many wounds the 'stealer takes. The human playerm ay choose to re-roll one of his dice if he wishes.
A human firing a longbow at the stealer rolls 3 dice. If any doubles are rolled, this is how many wounds the stealer takes. If a treble is rolled, an additional 6 wounds are caused, no matter what numbers are showing on the treble.
Crossbows on overwatch may take a maximum of three shots during the stealer player's turn.
Shortbows on overwatch may only take one shot during the stealer player's turn.
Longbows may not go on overwatch.

Fighting
To determine the winner of combat:
The stealer rolls three dice in combat and choose the highest.
Humans roll two dice and choose the lowest.
Highest wins.

If the human wins in close combat then the stealer takes a number of wounds equal to the number on the human's highest dice
Thus, if the 'stealer rolls triple 2s, and the human rolls 1 and 6, the human dies and the stealer is unharmed.
If the 'stealer rolls triple 2s, and the human rolls 3 and 4, the stealer takes 4 wounds.

After each combat has been resolved, if the 'stealer is still alive, the human dies automatically. (You might hurt a 'stealer, but you won't survive doing it!)

A human armed wih a greatsword or greataxe may add 1 to each of his dice, or 2 to one of his dice. (this represents a combination of his experience as a swordsman to help him win combat, and the weight of his weapon to cause injury)
A human armed with sword and shield may re-roll one of his own dice, or force the 'stealer player to reroll one of his own. (this represents a combination of his own combat experience and using his shield to defend himself from the 'stealer)
A human armed with two hand weapons may re-roll one, both or neither of his own dice, but may not affect the 'stealer's dice (this represents his reduced defensive capabilities, but high expertise in using his own weapons)

The following things have not been considered:
How many humans should be needed to take out the 'stealer?
What is the relative value of humans wielding crossbows, shortbows, longbows, greatweapons, sword/shields or twin hand-weapons?
Is 12 wound tokens for the 'stealer enough, or too many?
Should the 'stealer player be allowed to attack and destroy wooden doors?

It looks cool to me.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Looks interesting as a concept.

Not sure about the rate of fire (especially on Overwatch) of the crossbow vs. the shortbow. Plus the limitation of only one shot for SB. If anything I would have expected the reverse (from a Real Life point of view).

I think in general in makes for a fun monsterhunt (GS or no GS).

War is not about who is right. It is about who is left.
