My friend are still new to the game and I was just curious how this works:

How does Imperial Guard Platton play out as a troop type? Like we were setting teams up with Imperial Guard Cadian Shock Troops x 2 and making them our 2 troop types.
But I noticed in the Codex it noted with a * that all the troops on these 2 pages can make a unit. Anyone care to clear that up for us.

With the release of Colonel 'Iron Hand' Straken and Gunnery Sergeant Harker, is it wrong to have Catachan mixed in with Cadian?

A platoon is made up of a platoon command squad (PCS) and a number of subordinate squads (minimum two).

These squads are completely separate units and can be deployed separately, act indenpendantly, etc. Each squad counts as a scoring troop unit.

However, the whole platoon (3+ squads) only uses up one of your force org slots, allowing you to have six platoons (18+ squads). Also, if the platoon is in reserve then the whole platoon is rolled for together with a single roll so that they arrive on the same turn.

Scott-S6 has it correct. If you want to just take individual squads, you must take veterans.

So let me get this straight... and please correct me if I am wrong.... still a newbie.

I can have a PCS, 2 squads of shock troops, 2 squads of shock troops and they will all act as 1. Fulfilling 1 troop type?

They fill 1 Troops FoC Slot, but act as independent squads.

err i meant
PCS, 2 squads of shock troops, 2 squads of heavy weapons
troops

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hmm....

So I can have:

HQ:
Lord Castellan Ursarkar Creed & Kell

TROOPS:
platoon command squad
x2 squads of shock troops
x3 heavy weapons squads

TROOPS:
platoon command squad
x2 squads of shock troops
x3 heavy weapons squads

But each SQUAD acts independently when deploying unless it's from reserves.

Infantry squads (and no other unit, not Platoon command squads, Heavy weapon squads, veteran squads etc) can combine into larger units.

I.e 2 10man squads can form up into one 20man unit (Useful for killpoints and squad survivability aswell as having more ablative guardsmen to protect those vunerable heavy weapons).

I heartily advise against heavy weapon squads as it is just so easy to kill them and they are such an unavoidable liability in kill-point games.

Just to add a clarification, the "(minimum two)" squads mentioned above must be Infantry squads (ie your squad of Cadian Shock troops).

And I also recommend against Heavy Weapon squads, they're far too fragile. Case in point, played in a small tourney Saturday, last round it was two IG armies facing off for top place. He had 5 HW squads (2 LC, 2 AC, 1 HB), I had my heavy weapons scattered throughout my line squads. I went first and basically targeted his heavy weapon squads with a variety of ST 6 and higher weapons. At the end of my first turn he had one heavy bolter team and one autocannon team remaining. Two teams out of 15 survived shooting and/or passed their Morale tests.
