i have the five man blister pack and thats it i need to get a codex.
I like the idea of the leman russ punisher beacuse it is heavy 20

Seriously, buy the codex and read it, otherwise all anyone can do is shout the names of various units at you and see if you like the sound of them.

But you will need 2 troops and an HQ choice, the battleforce box is the cheapest way to fulfill this for IG. I suggest you look into it first (there's a cadian and catachan version, there are several types of metal IG troops available, but the costs really add up, I recommend using the cadian or catachan models)

Definetly obtain (buy) the 5th Edition Imperial Guard Codex asap and have a good read through that, including the fluff behind the different regiments to give you some ideas.

Then decide between these catagories; All-tank, all-mech*, All-infantry, Hybrid (a mix of all previous) or Other **

* All-mech means the inclusion of some to lots of Chimera compared to all-tank uses minimalist cheap un-mechenised troops to save more points for heavier tanks.

** Things like Ogryn heavy, Artillery heavy pie-plate based armies, Horde close-combat guard armies.. etc.

If you REALLY REALLY love snipers, and want to play IG... you have the option to add inquisitional units to your army (pick up either the Witch Hunters or Daemonhunters codex and find the allies rules). In either of the inquisition armies you can take Vindicare assassins which are badass snipers and have lots of cool special rules that you would probably like. They are really expensive however, which is not something IG usually do (spend a lot of points on a single unit).
