Drone without a Controller

Hey all, I want to make an Ork army of about 1000 or 1500 pts with the Mad Dok. What have you found is the best use for him? Attach to a Boyz squad? Or keep him independent at first and then join him up? I'm worried about the "have to move toward the nearest enemy" rule being exploited early on. But making a group of 30 boyz have FNP is pretty tempting.
Thoughts?

Ok, so if I have a total of 30 boyz, should I split them up and put him with one group as an assault squad and keep the other back as a scoring unit for objectives? Like a group of 10-15 plus the dok and a group of 15-20 with 'eavy armor and a nob? Or just throw all the boyz together in one big glorious group?

If you're going to invest in a unit of completely mad semi-suicidal berzerkers, you should go all the way with it.

The best option for the Mad Dok is The Green Tide ™
If your not playing an apoc game, then using him as a warboss makes a good option. Either stick him with nobs or regular boys and get him to assault.

The problem with the above is that he isnt countering their inherent weakness, that powerfist own them. It does, make them absolutely unkillable by small arms weapons.
I always thought the best way would be to put him with a 30 man unit of 'ard boys, giving you a 75% chance of ignoring a wound, provided it doesnt ignore either save. If you put this unit in the centre of the army it will be hard to draw out, as anything on the flanks to draw it out will be killed by the rst of the army, and if there is anything behind them you have to kill it anyway

Also, if he has to move toward the enemy unit as quickly as possible, assaulting if possible, does this mean he also has to run every turn or can I still shoot with his unit instead of running if that is a viable option?

The way I use the doc is stick him in a large squad of ard boys with his buddy Ghaz.
think about it the doc is great in CC and you want FNP for Ghaz anyway. besides its a horrible decision to have to make for an opponent attack Big bad Ghaz a buttload of ard boys or the nasty doc

20-30 ard boys acting as a screen for the rest of the army. That would be the core of Marc Parker's ork list that swept table 1 in the vegas GT
5+ meganobs. Lets you buy an invulnerable save for them, and makes them pass 92% of their saves against things that aren't ap2 or 1, or strength 8+
Both are expensive, both would form the core of your army, but both are scary.
