I have been playing 40k since January now and one of our local players has been playing for several years now. He explained to me that say you have a unit of 10 scarab swarms. One of the swarms has 2 wounds on it. The unit is in melee with a carnifex. Carnifex causes 1 wound. Now I can put the wound on a base and I want to put it on the base that only has 1 wound left. My friend says that the wound MUST go on a unit that is unhurt. I have yet to see where this is in the rule book but I took his word for it. So I was wondering Do you have to put the instadeath on an unscathed unit or can I put the insta death on a model that already has wounds? Im sure some of you will think this is a silly question but I dont know if my friend is losing it or getting differant versions of the game mixed up or if Im an idiot and just cant find it in the rule book. Thanks.

On a side note can a scarab swarm go to ground for a 5+ coversave in the open?

Page 26, main rules - second column, 6th paragraph. (for the ID query)

And yes, any cover save is improved by one for swarms (as per Stealth), so GTG is 5+ for them.

Edited for details!

I am unable to provide a link to the rule... but your friend is correct. you must always remove unwounded models whenever possible, if suffering instant death.

Look up in Multiple Wound Creatures and wound allocation. Pg 26. If the models are exactly the same you keep taking wounds on a model until it dies, then go to the next one.

Whoops didn't read far enough.

Remove the unwounded model first in instant death situations. This is good to know.

Remember it only applies to wound "groups", so wound allocation tricks can get around this.

This too, but I do not think scarab swarms can take advantage of that.

No, they can't, but I am nothing if not pedantic

First off, thank you for the info. 2nd so you mean if I have a unit of Nobz all differant I can put the insta death on a model with a wound before a model that is unscathed? Only if the models are all armed differantly?

Well techically no. What would happen is you divide all the wounds up over all the different models, then roll your saves, if a instant death happens on a particular model then it takes the result. So you could put all the instant death potential wound results on the model that already has wounds in that case, so they aren't as harsh against your unwounded models.

Yes. Because you allocate wounds per "group", you say "I am putting this ID wound onto this Group" if the only member of that group is already wounded, well sucks to be him, he takes it.
