What are the rules on how cover (walls, trees, etc.) is placed on the table before the game even starts? Do different pieces of cover have to be a certain length apart from eachother? Do you take turns placing the pieces of cover? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It just says that you both have to agree. So theres no rules on placing cover other than that?

Can you find any in the rulebook?

We usually go in turns, placing 1 piece after the other and then agreeing at the end.

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

For our friendly games, we like to make a battlefield that's interesting rather than by-the-numbers. This usually means arranging it in a way that 'makes sense' as if it was a real place (e.g. the mining complex on a jungle world probably would have an enclosing fence etc. etc.).

To keep it at least a little 'fair' - if the table is set up by one person (we're playing at his house for instance) then the other side chooses his table edge. If both players are helping to set up the terrain, we roll-off to see who chooses first. Though in practice it always seems to end up being a roll-off to see who gets the side with the couch!

In tournament games, expect even distributions of approximate amounts of cover of course.

When playing at the shop/tourneys usually the table is already set up - or we go by a 25% terrain rule and usually ask a 3rd party (one of the other 40k/Fantasy gamers) to set up the table for us.

At my home table I'll usually just set up something interesting before the game, or we decide on a scenario and decorate for that purpose, or we take turns a'la Necromunda - it's a bit Wild West here for how we might do it any given game.

I see three common ways of doing it:

Take it in turns to place pieces.
One player puts all the terrain and the other picks deployment zone (I don't see this in 40K anymore since picking deployment and taking first turn are now linked)
One player picks the terrain pieces and the other player arranges them on the table.

It really doesn't matter. Generally, at my club, whoever's ready to play first gets the scenery out.

Make it fair, don't be a dick. If you start putting out clearly biased terrain then people are going to start getting annoyed with you.
