I was told at GW that the minimum range of the basilisk (36") only applies if you are using Indirect Fire, and that there is no such restriction when using RLOS.

However, my mates at the FLGS say that the minimum range ALWAYS applies.

I haven't used it in a battle yet, (only got it the other day) but I'll need to know this kinda stuff. Who's got the right idea? The FLGS or the GW guys?

Why is this a Poll? This is a RaW thread yes?

There is no Minimum Range when firing Directly. Anyone who says there is is not playing by the rules (This is a RaW thread so I can say that )

Page 58, BRB:
Ordnance Barrage weapons
Differently from other unit types, vehicles carrying ordnance barrage weapons can choose to fire them either directly or as a barrage - declare before you fire.

If fired directly at the target, they are treated exactly like normal ordnance weapons (ignoring the minimum range in the weapon's profile).

As a side note, Griffon and Colossus have it specially noted that they Cannot fire directly. This could help you figure this out without ever lifting the rulebook or asking Gwar!.

Thank you Gwar!.

I put it as a poll becuase I was not sure of the rules and didn't figure that there was such a quick and obvious answer. (I didn't know that RAW mentioned it)

Once again, Gwar! is Right.

It's an easy enough mistake to make, but the answer's pretty incontestable when you look it up.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

It's not called "3", it's called Neapolitan.

What are you talking about? Neapolitan was French, not Italian.

(The real question is, why did they name an ice cream after him?)

This is why we need a facepalm ork.

It's named after Napoli (Naples in English) you dolt. You are thinking of Napoleon.

The short guy with the hat. Who was beaten by Hitler. In actual history.

Now that that's settled, there actually isn't such a thing as indirect fire. There's direct fire and barrage. It's pretty common for people to use the term indirect fire as both the opposite of direct fire and a synonym for barrage, and that leads to some odd misconceptions.

Also, Napoleon was at average height for frenchmen at his time. The english are notorious for their problems with measurement conversions.

In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"...

True. He looked small with his bodyguard, but that's because they were the elite forces selected (among other things) for being tall and imposing.

I am still significantly taller than him, so as far as I am concerned, he is still short.

His actual height was about 1.7m (5 feet 7 inches), average height for the time or slightly taller. Confusion has sometimes arisen because of different values for the French inch (pouce) of the time (2.7 cm) and for the Imperial inch (2.54 cm).

So what are you 6' 8"?

6' 2", 7 inches is significant by my standards.

Movie guy with the quesadillas???? I think I just blew my pop-culture fuse.

To back up Gwar on this one, Neapolitan refers to someone or something that is related to Naples, and has absolutely no bearing whatsoever to the historical figure, Napoleon. In fact, the word Neapolitan's origins extend almost three centuries before Napoleon became a general in France.
