So im fighting agaisn't an imperial guard army and i'm using space marines. I deploy one of my devestator squads right behind a wall so they don't have any LOS with any of his units. The first turn he launches a colossus siege mortar at my devestator squad. He hits dead on with his scatter roll and because its a 6str AP3 large blast my whole 5 man squad dies instantly without any cover save and/or armor save. Is this right??? If so how would I defend agaisn't this?? Also, is he able to do this every turn??

... Read through the rulebook a few times, Specifically the bits about Barrage Weapons and AP.

You Defend against it by, deploying out of range, blowing up the offending tank or taking a 10 man Devastator Squad. And yes, its a weapon, he can do it every turn. He can take 9 of them and fire 9 of them every turn if he wants.

He can do this every turn, it is hard to defend against. How ever it cannot be fire directly ... and it has a min range of 24" so get in close and stun the sod. Scouts work well infiltrate them in to the side and even their bolter can glance it. Then just keep stunning, till its destroy and/ or you can get in close to destroy it.

Breathe. Read page 32 of the rulebook.

An expensive specialist marine-killing vehicle got a lucky hit and killed a bunch of space marines. This is perfectly normal. The vehicle that did it has Av 12/10/10, open-topped, and can't shoot if you get inside 24". A number of counters exist depending on the situation on the battlefield and your preferred style of play.

Edit: And don't bunch up when facing pie plates. The big blast is 5" across. Your bases are 1" across and you can put them 2" away from each other. Spread out and he'll only be hitting a couple guys each shot instead of wiping out the whole squad.

The Colossus Siege Mortar is a Barrage weapon. The rules for Barrage weapons state that they do not require line of sight to fire on a target, as long as the target is within the range limitations (min/max). The Colossus Siege Mortar itself has a special rule that states cover saves may not be taken against wounds caused by it. The fact that it is also AP3 means it ignores a Space Marine's 3+ armor save.

Yes you and your opponent played it correctly. Yes he may fire it every turn. To defend against it you can shake, stun, weapon destroy, or destroy the Colossus, or mount your squad in a Rhino.

Edit: wow I type slow.

Just make sure he isnt "secretly" cheating on the range guess. I used to play with an IG player that would subtly cheat for his guess ranges. Things like tell new people HE has to set up terrain, and he was use his hand to measure terrain apart. So knowing how many inches his hand was and how many trees you were, he could get a REALLY accurate guess. Small things like that.

BUT the bonehead thing not to do on your part, is not put them in a spot that is 1. in range and 2. easy for him to guess. Example, your table is 4 feet wide (normally) and you set up in a spot about 10 inches from your edge. Deployments are normally 12 inches, so 4feet minus 10 inches is 38 inches. Things like that you have to remember. 10 inches is easy to guess lol

Whut?
40k has not used Guess ranged since 3rd edition... All he has to do is place the marker and then see if it within range (beyond min, within max)

Besides what Gwar! said.....

Back in 3rd I used to make mapsketches. As I learned different ranges (through legetimate measurements), I filled them in.
Combining that with a bit of A + B = C (all raised to the second power), made my range guessing, which was pretty accurate to begin with, absolutly deadly as the game progressed.

Cheating?......I don't really think so. *shrugs*

In the Grim Darkness of the far future, there is only Trigonometry.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).
