I haven't ever played LotR, but just saw a game played today and found it pretty interesting. I like the small scale skirmishing. Looking at the box sets, I think I like the rangers of middle earth and the riders of Rohan. Other than buying these two sets, what else should I get? The starter box? (gets me the rules and maybe enough enemy forces to fight) Would I need any other books?

Well you will certainly need the rulebook, that is a given. I assume you are referring to the Skirmish game as opposed to WOTR?

Mines of Moria is an excellent starting point, though if you are unlikely to ever use the miniatures you may be better off with just the hardback book.

As to what next to get, well thats really up to you. LotR is a very open ended game and you really can play it almost any way you want. If your interested in the primarily narrative driven scenario games then you can get whatever supplements appeal to you and work from there. You don't necessarily have to stick to collecting one race either as the scenarios tend to include lots of races and of course you can play whatever scenarios you see fit and make your own up if you desire.

Of course if you want to play tournament style games then but the appropriate and collect the force of your choice.

My own preference is for the scenario games but it's up to you and your opponents. Talk it through with them.

Well your interested in Rangers And Rohan (two of my personal favourites)
Mines of Moria is a good start IMO because, You get heroes which you can include in both of those forces, plus the rulebook. And of course as you add plenty of figures for the startings of an evil horde.

This as you said gives you plenty of models to fight so thus Mines of moria being a brilliant starting point.

Plus the sourcebook for whatever army you choose.

Steve

For Rangers a good source book is the Ruin of Arnor, and for Rohan (Don't have a specific source-book for themselves), probably the Two Towers Journey Book.
The Two Towers Journey Book has a lot of articles in it for making Rohan Scenery and has quite a lot of Scenarios. It even tells you how to make Helms Deep.

Wahoo!

I wish they came out with the source books, like they do with 40k Codex's.

Pick up a box of Rohan warriors while you're at it, you're going to need models to represent things when your horses get shot out from under you. Grab Eomer, some Rohan guard and you've got a pretty good force right there.

The plastic Rangers is a pretty decent box on its own. A box of Warriors of Minas Tirith couldn't hurt you too much. Faramir would be a good hero for your Rangers force

As for the Mines of Moria - I say check on ebay consitently. I recently got a box for $40.00 w/ shipping! That's pretty much half price of retail. Man....I am so looking forward to playing that game.....

Good luck!

Isenguard doesn't have a specific sourcebook, like Rohan. So the two towers journey book is pretty much the best they've got at the mo'.
