Colonel Mathis looked across the massvie valley below him. The Area was coated in city;this was going to be a very bloody and brutal fight. Yes,it was going to be tough. Time to call in the best. He turned to his Aide Alexios. "Send orders for 878 Combat Engineer Detachment to head into the city. Capture it. Stop at nothing."
Sooo. I have a cityfight tourney coming, what better to make a city fighting army? So i began.
Red= Purchased
Green= Painted

Last night, after getting the packages in the mail, i worked into the wee hours of the morning to produce what i feel is my best work yet.
Before i show you them, i'll show you the painted sprues:

As you can see,my paint scheme is Codex Gray for Armour,Fenirs Grey for the Fatigues, and Boltgun Metal for metals. Chaos Black Boots and Leathers.

The Las-Cannon for the Long range Squad.

"Her! Boss! Der's a 'umie zappy canoon over dar!" My las-cannon team, taking cover behind some rubble( Two large Rocks)

A side view. I'm not sure what to paint color to paint my sandbags yet, what do you guys think?

Another Side View, showing the battery pack.

The Heavy Weapons with Cpl. Brown, Holding His Bolt Pistol and Reading a to-be-painted map. Towards the back you can see Lcpl. Dunn and his Plasmagun.
That's all for now, expect an update tonight or tomorrow.

Nice crisp colour scheme. IMO though it could do with a brighter tertiary colour to draw the eyes - I'd suggest red personally. The sandbags should be painted the colour of sandbags .

As for the bases, I'd say hold fire on the large built up ones for standard guys. IMO things start to look ridiculous if every model is stood on a 4 foot plinth - I personally never build bases up unless they're on 40mm bases or larger, but I would advise you to only do it for character models if you are building up the standard 25mm bases.

You tell me AFTER i super glue it for one squad. Whatever, those were actually the largest ones,i couldn't seem to break them up more with the hammer without turning them into dust. I'll get basing sand/smaller rocks for the Aggressive Squad and CCS.

Success- I apparently was able to do it. I'm going to replace them with these rocks:

Better?

If they are standing on them then they would still be too large, and if they are standing next to them, then they would be obscuring the models. If you don't think of it as cheating, there are several websites where you can order pre-cast resin bases for relatively cheap prices - some of them go over the top and have massive built up monstrosities, but others look really good. Since you're in america, I'd recommend Secret Weapon miniatures who have a really nice range of resin bases.

Have you given much thought to your army's 'location' yet? IE, urban, desert, snow etc etc?

What lol? I'm in Canada. Very close to the border of the US though- 6 Hours north of New York.
EDIT: It's a City FIghting army, hence the Gray and Blues.

Oh right, the flag in the top corner of your avatar bit says USA.

Yeah, secret weapon have some really nice urban resin bases if you want to go down that route. Really detailed, but not built up.

Ofcourse, its only my opinion that built up bases look silly, other people love them.

Another Problem is i am teen-with the expense of the hobby, it have to try and take the cheapest route-i may just end up baseing them and painting the sand codex grey. As i look at the smaller rocks in the pics, they dont block-i think it looks pretty ok.

I'm not sure. My FLGS has a "Open Night" Tonight. I and mabey my super-painter friend will be going down, and raiding the bitz box for bitz. He also has basing supplies;we'll have to see how it turns out.

I really like your color scheme, it reminds me of the color scheme i am making for my Space Marine Scout army, but they are a snowy-army. To make you army look more urban splitter and less snowdrift you should put some blacks in there and use some darker, greys with less blue.

I have lived long enough, for I die unconquered.

I tend to like the built up bases myself. The cheapest and one of the most effective material to use to build them up is Plastic Sprue this can be clipped down into small bits and pieces and will genuinely look like rubble. I also rather like the effect of cheap thin pipe as pipe and would suggest you go to a hardware store and look at the pieces of plastic and see what can be scavenged!

How are you going to show them as Combat Engineers by the way I'd suggest lots of Mattoocks and Shovels. A Shovel was the CCW of choice during WW1 & 2!

Yeah, i'm just going to put lots of nades and shovels on them. I'll make a poll: Built Up Bases or not?

I'll go with witch one gets the most votes.

The nadmen and vox men bases look about right to me. MAybe Ive just gotten used to the rocks.

All poles should have a cupcakes option so people can click somthing useless and not mess up your vote.

Also does your camera have a close up function? (do they call it marco function?) On my camera its a little flower icon, which when selected allows the camera to focus on close up small objects. Unless your using your phone which probably wont have one.

One criticism I have is that the models look a little flat on the light blue armor. If youve got a blue wash blue ink or even watered down dark blue paint it can really bring out the details. Try it on say a spare helmet or something to see if you like the effect or not.

keep trucking.

In the game Combat Engineers just get Smoke Grenades in RL however they get loads of stuff like wirecutters, mine detecting gear and bomb disposal tools. I'd suggest you look it up on Wikipedia and browse around the web for some pictures.
To help with your photographs theres a great article on Dakka in the articles bit -Gosh I've really just stated the obvious!. I'd read that and make a light box really just a large cardboard box painted white inside which will really help as it gets the camera to focus on the model not the background unlike your earlier shots........

My,it's been a while! My Apologies, my life caught up with me. But after squashing it back down like a bug under a Guardsman's foot, who is probably under a Dreadnought foot, i got back to my 40k work.

I even got the Cities of Death Book!
Stratagem 2:
Booby Traps! WIP.

Panzershreck 87mm Rocket-Booby-Trap. Will fire into a bunch of ammo or such.

Banner man, WIP, My Excellent Painter Friend said he would take a jab at the Banner.

I went for that "Epic Charge Signal" Look.

Medic Man, with Shovel Conversion. Made to look like he's doing something other than gaping at Xenos Undressed Magazine*

Commander From the right...

And the left.

More to come!
